Ravage is the fourth EP by Nigerian rapper, singer and songwriter Rema. It was released on October 27, 2023, through Virgin Music, Mavin Records and Jonzing World. Similar to his previous project Rave & Roses in 2022, the EP features a mix of different genres such as Nigerian alté, afrobeats and Afropop and lyrically addresses the subject of hardwork, pride and diligence.[1][2]

Background and release[edit]

Following the release of his debut studio album Rave and Roses in 2022, with featured hit songs "Calm Down" and "Charm", of which Calm Down received global recognition and spawned a remix with American singer Selena Gomez, peaking at number three on the Billboard Hot 100.[3] On October 24, 2023, Rema announced the release of the EP.[4] He also teased two new songs, "DND" and "Smooth Criminal", from the EP that same day.[5] After the announcement, he released the five track Ep through Jonzing World on 27 October 2023.[6][7]

On 11 November 2023, Jonzing World and Mavin Records released the music video of the lead single "Trouble Maker" which was directed by Meji Alabi.[8]

Music and lyrics[edit]

Ravage is a five-track set containing rage lyrics, exploring themes of anger, pride, heartbreaks and empowerment. It primarily features elements of Afrobeats with Nigerian alté, and incorporates Afropop percussive rhythms.[9][10]

The EP begins with "Trouble Maker," an Afropop song in which Rema sends a message to his fans by telling them he his not a trouble maker, that he don't disturb anyone. The second track, "DND" meaning "Do Not Disturb," is an Afrobeats song describing how he sees other people's perspectives about him and talking about how people hate him. Showing fake love and trying to bully him. The third track, "Smooth Criminal", is an Afrobeats song which discusses the modern-day teenagers peer pressure, and all the experiences that teenagers face." The fourth song on the EP "Don't Leave," is an Afrobeats song which contains lyrics that express romantic love and sex. The last track, "Red Portion", is an Afrobeats song about love and iniquity.[11]
