Synopsis[edit]

Muriel and her husband Lee are beginning a bright new life following his return from the Korean War. However, this newfound stability is upended by the arrival of Lee’s charismatic younger brother, Julius, a wayward gambler with a secret. [1] Muriel soon finds herself drawn to Julius, and she is keen for the three of them to begin a new life together in California. However, this bid for the American Dream is blown apart when the younger of the two brothers disappears and heads for Las Vegas instead. Julius finds work in a casino where he begins a secret romantic relationship with a male co-worker, Henry, while restless Muriel embarks on a secret life of her own back in California, gambling on racehorses and discovering a love she never thought possible.
