More than one marker at one map

More than one marker at one map is possible. Kalan has created a new template. See e.g. here. Are you interested? --Obersachse 20:37, 18 June 2007 (UTC)

The english version is available. (Template:Location map+) --Obersachse 14:19, 19 June 2007 (UTC)

Can we stop the hyperlink?

I have discovered that a number of people click on the map, expecting to see a larger image complete with the red dot, instead they just get the map image. I was just wondering if there was a way to stop the template hyperlinking to the map png. Just a thought! MortimerCat 18:34, 28 June 2007 (UTC)

I think that it is good as it is. May be, someone wants to see only the larger image (without the marker). --Obersachse 15:33, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

Thumb wrapper

Any chance of someone more talented than me producting a wrapper similar to Template:GBthumb with links to additional map resources? --Bedders 13:43, 2 July 2007 (UTC)

Mozilla v. IE

Look at these images in Mozilla and in Internet Explorer. On my screen, this template works fine in Mozilla but shifts the dots downwards on IE, off the map. Is it just me? --maclean 06:46, 19 July 2007 (UTC)

Does anyone know why there's a random band underneath the map in Template:Germany nuke plant map? -Theanphibian (talkcontribs) 20:17, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

Oh i got it - there was a space between two location markers. You really have to keeps those with a rigid format for this to work. -Theanphibian (talkcontribs) 17:26, 25 August 2007 (UTC)

New York image

Does anyone else think that the New York image (at {{Location map New York}}) might be specified slightly wrong? The pushpin of Geneseo, New York looks slightly too high (Northerly) to me. --bdesham  05:56, 15 August 2007 (UTC)

I dunno, it looks okay to me, but I don't have a picky eye for NY. You're welcome to go to the Template:Location map New York and try adjusting the map border coordinates yourself. -Theanphibian (talkcontribs) 17:30, 25 August 2007 (UTC)
Whoops, forgot to follow up here… the error was in {{Infobox Settlement}}; the map is fine. Thanks for the response! --bdesham  20:39, 25 August 2007 (UTC)

Redundant marker

17-September-2007: I am setting the default "mark=" image file for the pointer as the (redundant) copy, Image:Red_pog2.svg ( identical to the original pointer), to bypass the ongoing image-cache problems during September 15-17, 2007. Only the original red-dot image (Image:Red_pog.svg) has been disappearing at size 8x8 pixels: the blue dot (Image:Blue_pog.svg) has been reliable when sized 8x8 pixels. -Wikid77 11:32, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

If seconds fields are present but empty--it breaks the map

Pag is located in Croatia
Pag
Pag
Pag (Croatia)
{{Location map
 |Croatia | label=Pag
 |mark=<!--dot-->Green pog.svg
 |lat_deg=44|lat_min=26|lat_sec=
 |lon_deg=15|lon_min=3|lon_sec=
 |lat=
 |long=
 |position=right
 |width=300
 |float=right
}}

If |lat_sec or |lon_sec are present but not filled in it breaks the map. Compare this map with the map on the Pag example on the template. Can anyone more familiar with this template fix this? —MJCdetroit 17:11, 27 October 2007 (UTC)

The problem seemed to be there because lon_sec and lat_sec were not conditional within an #expr. Therefore, I made them conditional and as shown in the map to the right everything seems good. —MJCdetroit 19:55, 27 October 2007 (UTC)

Inset maps

Would it be possible to specify the coordinates for an inset map in the Location Map template? E.g. for {{Location map Portugal}} there are inset maps of the Azores and Madeira. It seems that the editor could specify the pixel and geographic coordinate locations of each inset map and then place the markers correctly on the inset map. Thoughts? Rolando 16:30, 7 November 2007 (UTC)

It would be better to make special Location maps for the Azores and Madeira. May be I'll do. --Obersachse (talk) 23:35, 2 March 2008 (UTC)
I think it would probably be a lot easier (but not better!). ;-) I don't know how to do it, in any case, but how would your suggestion work with a map like that shown on Portuguese Liga 2007-08. There, someone has fudged the lat/long of a dot in order to make it show up in the right place. They would need two separate maps? Rolando (talk) 07:39, 3 March 2008 (UTC)
Okay, You're right. Another suggestion: Take Template:Location map Earth. --Obersachse (talk) 10:24, 3 March 2008 (UTC)

Multiple dots

Hello. Is there any possibility to enter various sets of coordinates = to show more dots on the map? Thanks. - Darwinek (talk) 20:17, 2 March 2008 (UTC)

Yes. See {{Location map many}} and {{Location map+}}. These are also linked to on the template page in the "See also" section.-gadfium 22:59, 2 March 2008 (UTC)

Usability Problem - clicking on Map

Hi there, Usually location maps using this template seem to be thumbnail size, so the size of the marker can obliterate detail (As an example, for many articles on towns in Northland, New Zealand it is impossible to tell which coast the town is on. Therefore I often click on a location map to see an enlargement, only to be disappointed as only the background map is displayed, even if it is in SVG format.

Could this template be amended so that a replacement link is injected around the image? A link which contains the coordinates and the background image as parameters so that the special page called can do the same trick that the template has done, only at a larger scale. Even if it uses an onclick attribute to override the standard link, that should work for most users. dramatic (talk) 03:06, 3 March 2008 (UTC)

For an example of a town article with this problem, see Houhora. I considered using a location map of just Northland, not the whole North Island, but the main aim of the location map is to give people an approximate idea of where this town is, and to do that they must be able to recognise other features on the map. Most people who would recognise a map of New Zealand will recognise the North Island (not that I have any evidence for that), but significantly less would recognise a map of just Northland.
I tried using a smaller dot, but it doesn't help enough.
A solution along the lines of dramatic's suggestion would be helpful. I'd like any solution to also work with the multiple dot versions of the template.-gadfium 04:29, 3 March 2008 (UTC)

Here's some ideas:

  • Link to a special page that shows a big version of the map. Not a bad idea, but not likely to happen. The developers are not going to bother for something that specific.
  • Link to the existing page for geographic data (the one you get when you click on coordinates). Easy to do, but gives you a page of links when you expect to see a map.
  • Pop up the miniatlas. Relatively easy to do with some messing with site javascript.
  • Link to a page which contains the large version of a map (in portal namespace, probably), and the marker and label displayed. Also relatively easy to do with some javascript.

Miniatlas probably has the best bother/advantage ratio, especially if we can get it to display maps at right zoom levels. OTOH, I do like the idea of a portal of maps connected with this template. Zocky | picture popups 15:45, 5 March 2008 (UTC)

By miniatlas, I presume you mean this. That looks great. Where can we find out more about this? Is this free software (ie not just an interface to Google maps), and can we use it now?-gadfium 19:21, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
I've found the documentation at m:WikiMiniAtlas, it is free software, and it's already implemented on en.wikipedia. In the article, you need to click on the little globe icon next to the coordinates, not on the coordinates themselves or on the location map. This gives a zoomable map, although unfortunately it doesn't appear to take note of the scale parameter to the coord template. If clicking on the location map could bring up this, with an appropriate zoom level, that would be fantastic. How can we move this forward?-gadfium 19:44, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
I worked out how to get an appropriate zoom level; see my edit at Houhora.-gadfium 20:58, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
That looks great Gadfium. Unfortunately the map which pops up when you click the globe seems to have a lower z-index than the wikipedia logo, so clicking on the zoom buttons takes me to the main page! (Might not happen if you have a large monitor browser window dramatic (talk) 23:19, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
That problem arises if the map overlaps the left-hand links bar. I just tried at 800x600 resolution, and it was just out of that area - presumably the implementer of the feature allowed for that resolution. For a smaller screen or narrower browser width, then yes there would be the problem you describe.-gadfium 06:13, 6 March 2008 (UTC)

I've modified Houhora to use a location map of just Northland, but with an inset of the whole of New Zealand. Is this better than the previous version?-gadfium 04:36, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

Request

Any way to get location maps for Niue and Tokelau? John Carter (talk) 20:26, 15 March 2008 (UTC)

I think, I could do, but is there really a need in a location map of an 10*10 km island? --Obersachse (talk) 20:33, 15 March 2008 (UTC)
You've got a point. Niue does however have, apparently, about 17 settlements as per here. Tokelau has significantly fewer locations, though, as per here, and it might be less than productive. However, a few editors, me included (or maybe primarily, other than User:Blofeld of SPECTRE), are going to be trying to add many of the settlements from most parts of the world to wikipedia in some form or another, and maps would definitely help. John Carter (talk) 20:39, 15 March 2008 (UTC)
OK, in this case I'll try to create a location map of Niue first, then of Tokelau. --Obersachse (talk) 10:52, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

Template naming conventions for subdivisions of a country

I propose that all location map templates for each subdivision in a country follow a naming convention so that they are all grouped together rather than being scattered across the entire A-Z range. For example for states in the USA: {{Location map Alaska}} becomes {{Location map USA Alaska}}, {{Location map New York}} becomes {{Location map USA New York}}. Or for Canada, {{Location map British Columbia}} becomes {{Location map Canada British Columbia}} and {{Location map Ontario}} becomes {{Location map Canada Ontario}}. RedWolf (talk) 17:51, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

There is no reason that you can't have both by using a redirect. I did this for your {{Location map USA Alaska}} example. —MJCdetroit (yak) 01:22, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
Of course. But I think, the preferred name should be "Location map country subdivision". --Obersachse (talk) 13:43, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
  • Unless there any objections within the next few days, I am going to make this change. Of course, the current templates will become redirects. RedWolf (talk) 03:41, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

Continents

Any chance someone could create maps of the 7 continents please? Socrates2008 (Talk) 11:15, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

We could take Template:Location map Earth and create on this base maps for all continents. South America, Afrika and Australia would be easy to create. But the others (most of all Antarctica) would be ugly. --Obersachse (talk) 17:31, 26 March 2008 (UTC)
Actually, Australia already exists as it's a country. Africa is the main one I'm after. Thanks Socrates2008 (Talk) 13:08, 27 March 2008 (UTC)
Is it that, what you want? --Obersachse (talk) 20:19, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

Bulgaria map problems

I'm having real problems with Template:Location map Bulgaria. (If you go there, you find a page where, as I understand it from looking at others, there should actually be a map. But instead, the page is essentially blank, and merely refers you to Template:Location map.

Just now, in composing this, I did look into the code on the edit page for Location map Bulgaria - and was rather surprised at what I found there! - apparently this is why an image actually does come up. However, there's still a problem, as far as I can see. Please have a look at User:Martha_Forsyth/Mom's_Code-samples#Locating_places_on_a_map for an illustration. The positioning does not work correctly when I use template:location map, but apparently when using template:infobox settlement, it does. Since the map that comes up in the two instances looks fundamentally the same, I'm suspecting that the problem may lie in the coordinates specified by the two templates, but understanding and fixing this is quite beyond me - I seem to be lost in a maze of templates and perhaps interlocking templates. Can someone help, please? Thanks -- Martha (talk) 16:36, 28 March 2008 (UTC) (P.S., if possible, please leave me a note on my talk page, even if that notes says "come back here to see the answer"!)

Fixed. --Obersachse (talk) 19:48, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

CIA Factbook maps

Just a note. It seems that CIA factbook map are not equirectangular. I had problems with the CIA map of Libya. So take care y'all. Hakeem.gadi (talk) 09:32, 3 April 2008 (UTC)

That's true. For small countries or near to equator situated we can use them, but with other countries there may be problems. --Obersachse (talk) 17:26, 3 April 2008 (UTC)

The image in the template has been replaced.[1] Can someone adjust the parameters if necessary (to suit the coordinates)? The same for Template:Infobox CityIT. Thanks a lot. --Eleassar my talk 14:05, 3 April 2008 (UTC)

Geo-tagging of map locations

The red dots on the map are active links, but clicking on one of them takes you to this link instead of GeoHack. Any chance this can be fixed please? 13:04, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

See above. --Obersachse (talk) 07:36, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
I think you might have misunderstood my request? The discussion you refer to above was about zooming in when the map is clicked. I'm suggesting that the hyperlinks for the red dots on the map use the underlying GPS co-ordinates of that point to redirect you to geohack, as happens when you click on a {{coord}} link. This will certainly be more useful than being taken to this big red dot, right? Socrates2008 (Talk) 11:08, 18 May 2008 (UTC)
Now I understood. --Obersachse (talk) 13:08, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

Gibraltar

Hi there. I wanted to create Template: Location Gibraltar but I'm not too sure how to go about it. Could someone please give me a hand? I would appreciate it. --Gibmetal 77talk 18:33, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

Hm, is there really a need in a location map for such a small unity like Gibraltar? I may help you, but I can't find any sense in location maps for micro objects. --Obersachse (talk) 07:35, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for your reply. Why wouldn't there be? there are many infoboxes found in Gibraltar related articles that use this template and at the moment are blank. I believe it would add useful information to these articles. Thanks. --Gibmetal 77talk 07:53, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
Would you prefer a blank map for the template or a map like this? --Obersachse (talk) 09:43, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
There already is a blank location map albeit not a very good one, but the idea is to bea able to use the locator feature present in some infoboxes. Regards --Gibmetal 77talk 20:33, 17 May 2008 (UTC)
I've created Template:Location map Gibraltar. Please test it. --Obersachse (talk) 22:37, 17 May 2008 (UTC)
Thanks! That seems to work fine. However, would it be possible to use this map instead, as the one used is outdated (there hasn't been a "neutral zone" since the eraly 1900s)?
Of course. In this case I have to recalculate the borders of the location map. But before I'll do that, please answer to my question. Would you prefer a blankened map for the template or not? On Gibraltar map-en-edit2.svg are shown a lot of details, which may disturb. --Obersachse (talk) 01:18, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

Do you mean a blank map of Gibraltar map-en-edit2.svg? I'm not sure. The detail on the map will be quite small in the template, so it might not matter. What do you think? Thanks again. --Gibmetal 77talk 10:13, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

I'll do and then we can talk about. --Obersachse (talk) 12:09, 18 May 2008 (UTC)
OK, thanks for your help. --Gibmetal 77talk 12:59, 18 May 2008 (UTC)
Ready. Template:Location map Gibraltar --Obersachse (talk) 13:00, 18 May 2008 (UTC)
It's definitely better, thanks. Although it might be even better by leaving things like roads and built up areas and just removing the labels on the land. Labels on the sea area will probably be best to leave in (Harbour, Bay, coves, etc). Other things I can think of particular importance, apart from those already mentioned are:
  • Leaving the locator map in the top left hand corner.
  • Labelling of the summit.
  • Maybe adding a modified key.
I think it will be better to locate things within as it will have some information to reference to. What do you think? I hope I'm not troubling you too much! --Gibmetal 77talk 13:19, 18 May 2008 (UTC)
It's your turn now ;-)
You only have to change the image Gibraltar map-en-edit2.svg that way you want. Save it under another name on commons and change the parameter in the template from image=Gibraltar locator map.svg to image=your_name.svg. That's all. --Obersachse (talk) 15:27, 18 May 2008 (UTC)
In the end I've decided to use the entire unedited map. However, when I change it in the template it doesn't update. Any idea why this is? --Gibmetal 77talk 16:42, 18 May 2008 (UTC)
