Michael "Mick" McGinley (born 1940)[1][2] is an Irish former Gaelic footballer who played for St Eunan's and the Donegal county team.
Career[edit]
McGinley attended St Eunan's College, where he played for the school team and was part of the 1956 MacRory Cup-winning team.[3][4] He also won a Rannafast Cup with the College in 1956.[5]
He won an Ulster Minor Football Championship title with Donegal in 1956.[5] He played for the Donegal county team at a senior level between 1959 and 1961.[5] At this time McGinley joined the British Merchant Navy.[5]
He worked in telecommunications.[5] Sigma Wireless is the name of his telecommunications company.[6]
McGinley is a business partner of Tony Boyle, who co-owns Persona, which has been involved in a lawsuit against Ireland.[1] Persona lost out to the Esat Digifone consortium of Denis O'Brien in 1995, a series of events which was later detailed during the Moriarty Tribunal.[1] Though Persona is dormant, as of 2023, McGinley and his family continue to provide additional equity for the company.[1]
McGinley introduced Dermot Desmond and Jim McGuinness to each other.[7]
Personal life[edit]
McGinley is from Dunfanaghy.[5] Married to Julia from Rathmullan, the couple live in Rathfarnham.[5] Their son, Paul, is a professional golfer.[3] The couple also have a daughter who is a midwife.[2]
McGinley has played in amateur golf tournaments in Ireland, Spain and Portugal.[2][5] One day, after having often experienced pains in his chest, he had a minor heart attack on the golf course.[2]

Boyle and business partner Michael McGinley (83), the father of former Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley, tried to bring in litigation funding from the UK, but this was found by the Supreme Court to be unlawful under the ancient law of champerty… Since then, Boyle said that he, McGinley and McGinley's family have put new equity into Persona, which is dormant other than for the litigation. 'At 83 years of age it's not fair that I can[sic] keep asking Michael to do that', Boyle said. 'But there is still a conviction on our side that we're right and we have to keep pressing this'.

Aside from being the father of professional golfer and Ryder Cup winning captain, Paul McGinley, Mick McGinley has been very successful, not only on the sports field, but also in business. He played football for Donegal, winning McCrory[sic] Cups with his school, along with captaining national amateur golf teams. His professional life has been notable for the success of his telecom's[sic] company, Sigma Wireless.
