Methodemic, previously known as Sweet Murder, are a British heavy metal band formed in Birmingham in 2013. The band put out their debut EP Aftermath which was released to critical acclaim in October 2013. In 2014 singer Andy Dyer left the band and was replaced by Emily Levy. The band disbanded in 2016 and after a failed reunion attempt in 2017 reformed with original lead singer Andy Dyer in 2022.

History[edit]

Formation and debut EP (2013)[edit]

The band was founded in May 2013 by Andy Dyer, Reece Lloyd, and Declan Moore shortly after the breakup of the band Exide which Andy Dyer and Reece Lloyd both played in.[1][2] [3] The initial idea to put the band together came from the former Exide manager Andy "Bear" Warner and was originally intended to be a second reformation of Exide but after auditions were held and Dec Moore became the second guitarist. The band decided that with slightly altered spelling they should be called Methodemic after the last track off the Black Sabbath album 13.[citation needed]

By August 2013, bassist Andy "Butter" Morris and drummer Nathan Hellier-Allport had joined the band and the lineup was complete. The band went into the studio in September 2013 to record their debut EP titled Aftermath which was released on 10 October 2013.[4] The band held an official launch party for the release of Aftermath at the 02 Academy in Birmingham on the evening of 10 October 2013 in order to promote its release.[citation needed]

Second EP and breakup 2014–2016[edit]

In 2014, the band began work on their debut album initially titled Liberty Or Death, which was meant to be released in late 2014.[5]

In January 2014 the band parted ways with guitarist Reece Lloyd for what the band described as "musical and personal differences". The band stated that their intention was to continue as a 4 piece.[6] On 4 May 2014 the band announced via their website that Daniel Riley was their new rhythm guitarist and would be joining the band on a full-time basis.[7]

In June 2014, after just 3 weeks as a member the band parted ways with rhythm guitarist Daniel Riley; they stated on their website that they won't be going into any details.[8]

On the July 1, 2014 the band announced via their Facebook and official website that the studio had been booked for November and that work on the follow up to Aftermath was 90% done and the band was almost ready to record. They also announced that a cover of a pop song they had adapted to sound metal would also be included on the album.

On November 1, 2014, 2 days before the band was going into the studio to record their next EP, Andy Dyer Jr. quit the band due to complications.[clarification needed]

On November 30, 2014, Methodemic gained a new singer in the form of Emily Levy.[9] In 2015 the band released a self titled 4 track ep. The band opened for the Norwegian metal band Hydra on their Northern Symphony festival pre show in Dudley.[10]

Attempted reunions 2016-2017[edit]

After the demise of the original band, Moore and Dyer reconciled and began to discuss a reunion. They wanted to change the name of the band to Sweet Murder and continue to perform Methodemic songs and release new material under that name, however instead of a quasi reunion a new band called Rumrunner was formed. Rumrunner disbanded in early 2018 and Dyer and Moore stopped working together.

Reunion 2022-present[edit]

In April 2022, Andy Dyer was interviewed by Spanish DJ Luis Celaa[11] on Radio Pacifikaos in which he discussed his music career. When asked what his future musical plans (if any) were, Dyer responded that he was open to the idea of Methodemic reuniting but that no plans to do so were in place at that time.

In September 2022, the band reunited at the suggestion of Andy Morris and were joined by Kyle Moore the younger brother of Dec Moore on Drums. The band's first return to the stage happened on the 4th of August 2023 at the Tamworth Cavern in Staffordshire England where they opened for local Tamworth band Chemikill.

The band returned to the studio in August 2023. The band's new EP Metamorphosis is due for release in early 2024.[12]

Musical style[edit]

The band's music has been described as a mix of traditional heavy metal, speed metal, power metal and hard rock. It has been dubbed "dog metal" by fans because the band's sound is a mixed breed of many different heavy metal styles and subgenres.[13][14]
