When you're not logged in, "Sign in / create account" is shown in the top right of the screen. This is incorrectly punctuated - there shouldn't be a space either side of the slash. The same error can be seen in the title of the screen reached by clicking on the sign in link. Can this be corrected? (I brought this up at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)#Removing spaces either side of slash where another editor was of the opinion that the spaces were in fact common practice - not sure what the general consensus would be?) We need to decide on log in v.s. sign in as well, To get on you click "sign in", to get off you click "log out" — xaosflux Talk 02:58, 18 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well, the term sign out would be more appropriate to use here. This would create a certain sense of consistency as well. --Siva1979Talk to me 10:13, 18 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Inquiry[edit]

What is the purpose of the term Remember me? Whenever, I delete the history of the pages I have visited over the internet, I have to type in my username as well as my password all over again. Moreover, this also happens when I sign out from Wikipedia and sign in back again without deleting my history contents. Is the tag redundant here? --Siva1979Talk to me 16:23, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think when you check Remember me it stores your user name and password in a cookie so you are automatically logged in when you go to Wikipedia. It is separate from your browser remembering your information so it fills in the text boxes for you. When you delete your history, you are probably deleting cookies as well, thus you are not logged in automatically. When you log out, you also delete (or maybe change?) the cookie so that you are not logged in automatically.
Don't quote me on any of this, but I'm pretty sure that's the general idea. —Mets501 (talk) 16:37, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, then I have to change my internet browser settings. If I remember clearly, there is an option not to delete cookies whenever one wishes to clear the history content. Thank you for the information. The remember me tag is not redundant after all. --Siva1979Talk to me 16:55, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

IP address?[edit]

This may be the wrong place, but I seem to remember that the header used to include your IP address when you were logged out. This would make it significantly fewer clicks to see your contributions (for those with fairly static IPs), but maybe I'm missing something, short of a browser bookmark. 64.126.24.11 15:58, 1 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

username vs account[edit]

I've reverted the change of this from account to username, as we use the term account most everywhere else (e.g. Wikipedia:Why create an account?). — xaosflux Talk 04:39, 1 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Link to Help:Logging in[edit]

{{editprotected}} I want to propose change to "Special:UserLogin" page - I hope this is the correct place. The page should link to Help:Logging in.--Kozuch (talk) 18:24, 8 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I can work out, this page just affects the "login/create account" message that shows up in the top right when you log out. To be perfectly honest, I've no idea which page deals with Special:UserLogin. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 19:12, 8 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
