Mahatma Gandhi College, Iritty is one of the educational institutes in Iritty. It operates under the Iritty Educational Society, and is aided by the Government of Kerala. The college started functioning on 13 July 1995. Initially, the college was affiliated to the University of Calicut. At present the college is affiliated to Kannur University.[1] The college was accredited by the NAAC with 'A' grade in 2016.

Mahatma Gandhi College, Iritty, founded by Iritty Educational Society, is the realization of a long cherished dream of the hard-working and enterprising people of the region. As there was no institution for higher studies near the locality, enterprising people with a vision formed Iritty educational society in 1982 and sought the permission of the University of Calicut and Kerala government to start a new aided college. The society purchased around 17 acres of land at Keezhurkunnu, 4 k.m. away from Iritty, in between Mattannur and Iritty near the Thalassery- Mysore State Highway, as the permanent site for the proposed college. The site is noted for its scenic beauty, easy accessibility and calm atmosphere so needed for scholarly pursuits. The tranquil atmosphere that envelops the region makes it an ideal spot for the scholarly aspirants. The college started functioning on 13th July 1995. Initially, the College was affiliated to University of Calicut. At present, the college is affiliated to Kannur University.

Library[8][edit]

Mahatma Gandhi College has a well stocked college library housed in a spacious building where over ten thousand books and reference books cater to the scholarly needs of the discerning student committee. Also to update day to day events at national and international levels, newspapers in Malayalam, English and many periodicals are available. Journals related to Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science and Commerce are also purchased for the scholars who aspire to scale the heights of knowledge in different disciplines. There is a separate reading room for the students and staff of the college. To facilitate the students in the pursuit of higher education with the help of relevant books and reference volumes, open access system is followed in the college library of M.G. College. Also, a network resource centre installed with six computer systems having internet facilities helps the students community to travel through the information superhighway for gaining greater exposure to the world of knowledge. A set of hundred volumes comprising the collected works of Mahatma Gandhi is an added attraction of the College library.

A Library Committee has been functioning at Mahatma Gandhi College with the aim of masterminding the integrated development of the library in terms of books and journals available, library facilities and services open for students and the staff and further expansion necessary in the context of the emerging knowledge society.

Hostel[9][edit]

A newly constructed college hostel with fifteen well furnished rooms is a timely help for students who come from distant regions. The infrastructure of the hostel provides facilities like study hall, prayer hall, dining room and a spacious kitchen. The hostel building is situated just fifty meters away from the college.

College Canteen[10][edit]

Within twenty meters away from the main block of M.G. College, college canteen functioning in a separate building from where the students and the staff can have food which is hygienic, nutritious and tasty at a reasonable and reduced rate. There are separate dining rooms for the students and the staff.

Computer Lab[11][edit]

Mahatma Gandhi College has three computer labs installed with eighty state-of-the-art computer systems for the timely and immediate use of students and staffs alike. Broadband internet facility is at the disposal of the students to access the information superhighway so that they can always update the current developments in the field. These facilities help the students to gain hands-on experience with latest pieces of software emerging in the ever expanding field of information technology.

Physics Lab[12][edit]

The spacious and well-equipped Physics lab enables student who opts for B.Sc. Physics programme to gain the proper and adequate exposure to the world of experimental physics which, in turn, enabled many of the alumni of the department to secure admission in prestigious Central universities and premiere institutions for higher studies. The solid base gained in experimental physics from our lab enabled them to pursue doctoral research in some of the well known foreign universities also.

Network Resource Centre[13][edit]

A Network Resource Centre installed with fifteen computer systems having broadband internet connection is part of the facilities at the beck and call of the students who want to widen their intellectual horizon through an exposure to the World Wide Web so that they can always update themselves with current developments in the academic and social levels to meet the challenges of the emerging knowledge society. It is founded and run with the financial assistance of the U.G.C.

Seminar Hall[14][edit]

There is a well furnished seminar hall having a seating arrangement for a hundred and fifty people and equipped with audiovisual facilities as part of the infrastructural facilities at the college.

Conference Hall[15][edit]

A mini conference hall with a seating arrangement for fifty people where official meeting of the staff of the college is conducted.

Open Air Auditorium[16][edit]

An open air auditorium having space for accommodating around three thousand people is meant for outdoor programmes and functions conducted at Mahatma Gandhi College.

College Store[17][edit]

A college store functions at MG College from where students can purchase text books, notebooks and stationary items. Also, there is a reprographic centre attached to the college store in order that students can have photostat copies of books and study materials.

Mini Gymnasium[18][edit]

A mini gymnasium equipped with gadgets for training to increase the physical powers of students is part of the facilities provided by the physical education department of M.G. College.

Playground[19][edit]

There is a playground where students can practice different sports and games items like athletics, football, softball, handball, volley ball, kabadi, khoko, badminton, cricket etc.

1. Code of professional ethics[edit]

a) Teachers and their responsibility[edit]

Teacher should:

  1. Adhere to a responsible pattern of conduct and demeanour expected of them by the community.
  2. Manage their private affairs in a manner consistent with the dignity of the profession.
  3. Seek to make professional growth continuous through study and research.
  4. Express free and frank opinion by participation at professional meetings Seminar, conference etc., towards contribution of knowledge.
  5. Maintain active membership of professional organization and strive to education and profession through them.
  6. Perform their duties in the form of teaching, tutorial, practical, and research work conscientiously and with dedication.
  7. Participate in extension, co-curricular and extracurricular activities, community services.

b) Teachers and students[edit]

Teachers should:

  1. Respect the right and dignity of the student in expressing his/her opinion.
  2. Deal justly and impartially with student regardless of their religion, caste, political, economic, social and physical characteristics.
  3. Recognize the difference in the aptitude and capabilities among students and strive to meet their individual needs.
  4. Inculcate among students scientific outlook and respect for physical labour and ideals of democracy, patriotism and peace.
  5. Be affectionate to students and not behave in a vindictive manner towards any of them for any reason.
  6. Pay attention to only the attainment of student in the assessment of merit.
  7. Aid student to develop an understanding of national and international outlook and national goals.

c) Teachers and Colleagues[edit]

Teachers should:

  1. Treat other members of the profession in the same manner as they themselves wish to be treated.
  2. Speak respectfully of other teachers and render assistant for professional betterment.
  3. Refrain from allowing consideration of caste creed, religion race or sex in their professional endeavour.

d) Teachers and authorities[edit]

Teachers should:

  1. Discharge their professional responsibilities according to the existing rules and adhere to the procedures and methods consistent with their profession in initiating steps through their own institutional bodies and/or professional organizations for change of any such rule detrimental to the professional interest.
  2. Co-operate in the formulation of policies of the institution by accepting various offices and discharge responsibilities which such office may demand.
  3. Co-operate with the authorities for the betterment of the institutions keeping in view the interest and in conformity with dignity of the profession.
  4. Should adhere to the condition of contract.
  5. Give and expect due notice before a change of position is made.

e) Teachers and non-teaching staff[edit]

  1. Teachers should treat the non-teaching staff as colleagues and equal partners in a co-operative undertaking, within every educational institution.
  2. Teachers should help in the function of joint staff-councils covering both teachers and non-teaching staff.

f) Teachers and Guardians[edit]

Teachers should:

  1. Try to see through teachers bodies and organization, that institutions maintain contact with the guardians their students , send report of their performance to the guardians whenever necessary and meet the guardians in meetings convened for the purpose for mutual exchange of ideas and for the benefits of the institution.

g) Teachers and Society[edit]

Teachers should:

  1. Recognize that the education is a public service and strive to keep the public informed of the educational programs which are being provided.
  2. Work to improve education in the community and strengthen the community’s moral and intellectual life.

Code of Conduct for students[edit]

  1. Students are expected to maintain the highest standards of discipline and dignified manner of behavior inside as well as outside the College campus. They shall abide by the rules and regulations of the College and should act in a way that highlights the discipline and esteem of the College.
  2. A six day working schedule from Monday to Saturday is followed.
  3. All the students are expected to be present in the class well -within time and late coming will attract a fine. Late coming will also result in loss of attendance for the corresponding hour.
  4. Students shall rise from their seats when the teacher enters the class room and remain standing till the teacher takes her/his seat or they are allowed by the teacher to sit. Silence shall be observed during class hours.
  5. No student shall enter or leave the class room when the session is on without the permission of the teacher concerned.
  6. In the events of Student seminars/project presentations etc., it is compulsory that all the students of the concerned class be present for the entire session.
  7. All the students are expected to attend all college functions in college uniform unless otherwise specified.
  8. All the students shall wear their identity cards, well displayed. Identity badge is a public document and any teaching staff and non teaching staff shall have the right to peruse it. Denial of that alone invites disciplinary action.
  9. Students are expected to maintain silence in the academic buildings to maintain the decorum and, any deviant behavior such as hooting, whistling, loitering etc. will be treated as an instance of indiscipline.
  10. For independent study, students are expected to use the class rooms, library or the demarcated areas of the academic building and shall not resort to sitting in staircases or circulation areas where they could interfere with the free movement.
  11. Students are encouraged to make use of the library, common computing facilities and to involve in professional body activities or any program authorized by the college beyond class hours. However under normal circumstances students shall retreat to their hostels or residences by 6.00PM.
  12. Access to academic buildings beyond the above timing and on holidays without written permission from the concerned HoD will be treated as a case of indiscipline.
  13. Keep the campus neat and clean. Do not put any waste anywhere in the campus except in the waste baskets kept.
  14. Consumption of intoxicants / psychotropic substances in any form or smoking or using chewing gum, pan masala etc. are strictly prohibited.
  15. It is strongly advised to refrain from activities such as scribbling or noting on walls, door or furniture which could deface the college and destroy the academic ambiance.
  16. Carefully handle the furniture, equipments, fixtures and appliances of the college and lab. Careless handling/misuse of the above could result personal injuries or damage to property Follow safety precautions near moving machines and electrical installations. In the event of damage of property, the responsible students will have to bear the cost of replacement/repair with fine.
  17. Students are not permitted to arrange any unauthorized celebrations and decorations of any magnitude in the campus.
  18. Students are expected to make use of academic, co-curricular and extracurricular facilities available to the optimum levels. This will certainly make them physically fit, academically competent, mentally alert and socially sensitive.
  19. Students who intend to represent the college in intercollegiate events shall take prior permission from the concerned head of the department and the selection will be based on parameters such as academic performance, attendance, character, existing academic pressure and competence of the student in the proposed event for participation.
  20. Political activity in any form is not permitted in the College campus. Unauthorized meetings, propaganda work, processions or fund collections are forbidden within the College, hostels, and outside the college.
  21. Harassing juniors, ill treatment to other fellow students or any such form of ragging is objectionable and liable to be treated as criminal offence by the law enforcing agencies as per the directives of Hon'ble Supreme Court of India.
  22. Misbehavior towards girl students, use of threat or violence against members of the staff or fellow students will be considered as very serious cases of misconduct.
  23. Pay fees, in advance or in time, which will avoid fines.
  24. Any violation of the above rules will invite penalty in the form of warning, fine, bringing of parents or any course of corrective measure as found suitable by any staff member or higher authority of the College.
  25. In case of any instance of noncompliance of existing rules or any observed matter/behavior that deviates from the vision and mission of the college, all the staff members are empowered to initiate disciplinary procedure by filling in a standard form which in turn may lead to the constitution of an enquiry committee and further proceedings.

Code of Conduct for Administrative Staff[edit]

  1. All staff of the Institute is responsible for protecting and taking reasonable steps to prevent theft or misuse of, or damage to the Institute’s assets including all kinds of physical assets, movable and immovable property.
  2. All the staff members should follow the rules and regulations of the Institution as are prevalent from time to time.
  3. Staff must refrain from any form of harassment or unlawful discrimination based on existing legislative requirements relating to gender/sexuality/age/marital status, pregnancy or likelihood of pregnancy; physical features, disability or impairment (physical disability or medical status).
  4. Every staff should maintain confidentiality regarding any affairs in the college. They should not provide, directly or indirectly, any confidential information to anyone unless instructed by asuperior officer.
  5. The administrative staff should familiarize themselves with College policies that are relevant to their responsibilities. They should adhere to those policies to the best of their ability.
  6. The administrative staff should not be engaged in any inappropriate relationship with students.
