Kaltungo is one among the 11 Local Governments Area of Gombe State, Nigeria. Its headquarters is in the town of Kaltungo in the western part of the Local Government Area on the A345 highway at 9°48′51″N 11°18′32″E / 9.81417°N 11.30889°E / 9.81417; 11.30889.[1]

The Kaltungo LGA covers an area of 881 square kilometers and has two distinct seasons: the dry season and the rainy season. Kaltungo LGA receives an estimated 1000 mm of precipitation annually. In Kaltungo LGA, the wind blows on average at 10 km/h.[2]

Hospital[edit]

The General Hospital Kaltungo served snakebite victims from Duguri District, Alkaleri LGA, Bauchi State, after a flood along the River Benue in October 2012 resulted in a large increase in the population of venomous snakes. A July 2013 report indicated that over 200 people in Duguri District had died of snakebite; "whoever is lucky to make it to Kaltungo is treated in only two days and then they return home."[12]

Government[edit]

The Current Local Government Chairman and Deputy Chairman are Faruk Aliyu Umar and Solomon Lande as deputy chairman respectively. They are both from All Progressives Congress.[13][14]

Snakebite Treatment and Research Centre[edit]

Kaltungo is well known for having various kinds of snakes in Northern Nigeria. This led to the establishment of Kaltungo Snakebite Hospital that was later upgraded to Snakebite Treatment and Research Centre, Kaltungo by the intervention of the office of the Sustainable Development Goals with the Gombe State Government.[18]

Authorities of the Centre revealed that over 400 snakes of different varieties are being exported from the centre to Liverpool in England every month to help them extract venom from the snakes to produce drugs.[19]

Economy[edit]

In Kaltungo LGA, a variety of animals are raised and sold, including camels, cows, and goats. The Kaltungo LGA's economy heavily relies on agriculture, with a variety of crops growing there, including sorghum, millet, beans, and rice. The trading, hunting, and creation of crafts are additional significant economic activity in the Kaltungo LGA.[20][21]

Climate[edit]

The district's yearly temperature is 29.63 °C (85.33 °F) and it is 0.17% higher than Nigeria's averages. It typically receives about 64.86 millimeters (2.55 inches) of precipitation and has 93.41 rainy days (25.59% of the time) annually.[22][23][24]

From February 10 to April 20, the hot season, with an average daily high temperature above 95 °F (35 °C), lasts for 2.3 months. In Kaltungo, April is the hottest month of the year, with an average high of 95 °F (35 °C) and low of 74 °F (23 °C).[22][24]

The 3.4-month cool season, which runs from July 1 to October 14, has an average daily maximum temperature of less than 85 °F (29 °C). Kaltungo experiences its coldest month of the year in December, with average lows of 58 °F (14 °C) and highs of 89 °F (32 °C).[22][25][23]
