Jangal is a census town in the Chakdaha CD block in the Kalyani subdivision of the Nadia district in the state of West Bengal, India.

Jangal is located at 23°01′18″N 88°29′28″E / 23.0218°N 88.4912°E / 23.0218; 88.4912.

According to the map of Chakdaha CD block, in the District Census Handbook 2011, Nadia, Chanduria, Priyanagar, Shimurali, Jangal, Madanpur, Saguna and Kulia form a cluster of census towns between Chakdaha and Kalyani/ Gayespur.[1]

Area overview[edit]

Nadia district is part of the large alluvial plain formed by the Ganges-Bhagirathi system. The Kalyani subdivision has the Bhagirathi/ Hooghly on the west. Topographically, Kalyani subdivision is a part of the Ranaghat-Chakdaha Plain, the low-lying area found in the south-eastern part of the district.[2] The smallest subdivision in the district, area-wise, has the highest level of urbanisation in the district. 76.73% of the population lives in urban areas and 23.27% lives in the rural areas.[3]

Demographics[edit]

According to the 2011 Census of India, Jangal had a total population of 5,106, of whom 2,651 (52%) were males and 3,575 (48%) were females. Population in the age range 0–6 years was 531. The total number of literate persons in Jangal was 3,575 (78.14% of the population over 6 years).[4]

Infrastructure[edit]

According to the District Census Handbook 2011, Nadia, Jangal covered an area of 1.8718 km2. Among the civic amenities, the protected water supply involved overhead tank, tubewell/borewell, and hand pump. It had 466 domestic electric connections. Among the medical facilities it had one veterinary hospital and 12 medicine shops. Among the educational facilities it had three primary schools. The nearest middle school was at Priyanagar 2 km away, and the nearest secondary and senior secondary schools were at Sikarpur 3 km away.[5]

Transport[edit]

Madanpur railway station, located nearby, is situated on the Sealdah-Ranaghat Line of the Kolkata Suburban Railway.[6]
