John Jarrett Clinton, Jr. (June 22, 1938 – September 30, 2023) was an American physician. He served as acting Surgeon General of the United States from July 1997 to February 1998.
Biography[edit]
Clinton was born in Topeka, Kansas, on June 22, 1938. He received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Kansas Medical Center and Master of Public Health from Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. Clinton led various medical groups throughout the early 1990s.[1] He was appointed acting surgeon general on July 2, 1997, and served until February 12, 1998 (226 days) under President Bill Clinton, replacing Audrey F. Manley and being succeeded by David Satcher. He also served as Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs from August 14, 2000, to October 29, 2001. Clinton died in his San Diego home on September 30, 2023, at the age of 85.[2]
