Forest Hill is an unincorporated community in Wood County, located in the U.S. state of Texas.[1] According to the Handbook of Texas, Forest Hill had a population of 30 in 2000.
History[edit]
The area in what is known as Forest Hill today may have been settled as early as 1860. In the 1930s, the settlement had several scattered homes, a Baptist church, and one business. Morris Coats discovered oil just to the south of Forest Hill in 1949, but the discovery had no lasting effects on the community. Another church was built in 1980, but only one church and a business were shown on county maps at the end of the decade. The population was reported as 30 in 2000.[2]
Geography[edit]
Forest Hill is located on Texas State Highway 37, 3 mi (4.8 km) northeast of Quitman in north-central Wood County.[2]
Education[edit]
Forest Hill had its own school in the 1930s. It was originally known as Ratscuffle because, in its early days, rats would scamper along the floor during spelling bees held there on Saturday nights.[2] Today, the community is served by the Quitman Independent School District.
