DescriptionPaddlefish- his mouth is firmly shut this time (27287610353).jpg
And here is the real McCoy- the Paddlefish. His mouth is firmly shut this time! I have seen Paddlefish before but probably one tenth this size! Paddlefish have been referred to as "primitive fish" because they have evolved with few morphological changes since the earliest fossil records of the Late Cretaceous, seventy to seventy-five million years ago. They are filter feeders, and have electro-receptors in their long snouts which can detect weak electrical fields which signal the presence of prey items in the water column, such as zooplankton which is their primary diet. Paddlefish have poor eyesight and are fairly long lived. Their populations have unfortunately declined rapidly in recent years due to pollution, human encroachment and the construction of dams which block their route upstream to their usual spawning ground. The Chinese Paddlefish in fact is considered extinct as none of them have been seen since2003. (Toronto, Canada, Nov.2015)
