Description
English: Photograph from box labeled Bernt Balchen. Balchen was a Norwegian-American aviator, polar explorer and military man. The photo very likely depicts the light cruiser USS Raleigh (CL-7) visiting Stockholm in late July, 1929. USS Raleigh served as flag-ship of Vice Admiral John Havens Dayton (Commander, Naval Forces, Europe) and made diplomatic calls to many principal European ports in the first half of the year 1929, while being commanded by Captain William King Riddle. On July 26, sailor Earnest A. Highsaw from Culleoka, Collin County, Texas died in Stockholm aged 21 after stricken ill with appendicitis while aboard the USS Raleigh off the coast of Sweden.
