Dušan the Mighty (Serbian: Душан Силни, Dušan Silni) was a Serbian paramilitary unit formed in 1991 during the Croatian War of Independence, active up until 1995.[1][better source needed]

Wartime[edit]

In the Battle of Borovo Selo, the Dušan the Mighty forces joined the White Eagles to defend the suburb of Borovo Selo from Croatian police. This attack came on May 2nd and Serbian forces repulsed the Croatian attack.

War crimes[edit]

On October 18th 1991, Serbian forces supported by the Dušan the Mighty militia captured about 50 Croatian citizens from the town of Lovas, where they were sent to an agricultural cooperative. They were assisted by JNA and other Serb paramilitaries, killing and torturing 40-70 citizens, the leader of the unit was never charged with war crimes, however 3 members of the group were found guilty. The trial included:

  • Saša Stojanović
  • Jovan Dimitrijević
  • Zoran Kosijer

They were found guilty for crimes related to the Lovas killings.[2]

Serbian National Renewal[edit]

In May 1991, A split between Mirko Jović and Vuk Drašković occurred, Mirko Jović untied his faction with Vojislav Šešelj creating the Serbian National Renewal. Dušan the Mighty was one of the volunteer units, being the military wing of the faction.
