"Whistle Podu" (transl. Blow the whistle) is the first single in the soundtrack of the upcoming Indian Tamil-language film The Greatest of All Time, which is composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja. Written by Madhan Karky and mainly sung by Vijay, the film stars the latter in dual roles, alongside Meenakshi Chaudhary, Prabhu Deva and Prashanth. It is directed by Venkat Prabhu and produced by AGS Entertainment.
The single was released on 14 April 2024, coinciding the occasion of Puthandu (Tamil New Year). It received generally mixed reviews from fans, but eventually surpassed the records set by "Arabic Kuthu", which gained 23.7 million views within 24 hours, by gaining 25.5 million views; becoming the most-viewed South Indian first single lyrical video.
Composition[edit]
The Greatest of All Time marks as Yuvan Shankar Raja's first collaboration with Vijay after Pudhiya Geethai (2003); Yuvan only composed the songs while his brother, Karthik Raja, composed the score. He would also collaborate with Prabhu for their tenth film together after doing three consecutive films. Their collaboration includes chart-topping albums like Chennai 600028 (2007), Mankatha (2011) and Maanaadu (2021). Yuvan completed scoring for the first single, which he stated would be a dappankuthu number, by mid-September 2023.[1] In late October, Madhan Karky confirmed that he wrote the lyrics for the song and Vijay had sung it, marking his collaboration with the latter after "Asku Laska" from Nanban, "Google Google" from Thuppakki (both 2012), and "Selfie Pulla" from Kaththi (2014).[2] The title "Whistle Podu" was perceived by some media as an allusion to the Chennai Super Kings' anthem.[3]

Background and production[edit]
The music video was choreographed by Raju Sundaram, who has previously collaborated with Vijay for many films including Badri (2001) and Varisu (2023). He also collaborated with Prabhu for Maanaadu. The song sequence filming began with the film's principal photography commencement, which was on 2 October 2023 at Prasad Labs in Chennai.[4] Sundaram confirmed on 9 October that the sequence had completed filming. Reportedly, Artificial intelligence was used during the making of the sequence.[5]

In the music video, the song pictures Vijay at a bar, along with his squad members Prashanth, Prabhu Deva and Ajmal Ameer.[6]
