On the evening of March 12, 2024, Rami Hamdan Al-Halhouli (Arabic: رامي حمدان الحلحولي), a 12-year-old Palestinian boy from the Shu'fat refugee camp in East Jerusalem, was fatally shot by Israeli Border Police.[1][2][3][4][5]Al-Halhouli was seen lighting a firework and holding it above his head moments before he was shot. According to video footage of the incident, the firework was aimed upwards into the sky, and Al-Halhouli was hit by a bullet before the firework could go off. Israeli police stated that a single shot was fired at a "suspect who endangered the forces while firing aerial fireworks in their direction". Al-Halhouli was critically injured and later pronounced dead upon arrival at Hadassah Medical Center. The bullet reportedly hit Al-Halhouli in his heart.[6]
Israel National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir issued a statement in support of the "Border Police officers who risked their lives in the face of dozens of Arab rioters," and offered his backing to "the fighter who killed the terrorist who tried to shoot fireworks toward him and toward forces. This is exactly how we must again against terrorists — with determination and precision."[7][8]
