  • Comment: There is no indication that the editor is going to solve the multiple issues. While his awards might be real, the sources for many do not specifically verify. Maybe the editor will really clean this up properly. Ldm1954 (talk) 03:14, 4 March 2024 (UTC)
  • Comment: Why do academics (and their students) keep thinking that just citing the resume and the faculty website is enough for notability? "UCLA newsroom article, which is a reliable secondary source"--no. Drmies (talk) 14:39, 15 January 2024 (UTC)
  • Comment: If you submit again without making major changes, including removing WP:PUFFERY this will probably be permanently rejected. Be much more restrained, no bragging or boasting. Sources that are independent, Ldm1954 (talk) 00:21, 17 December 2023 (UTC)
  • Comment: His awards might make him notable. However, they include some such as PYI which are not notable, and the only sources are his own CV. At least a few independent sources for his notable awards are needed. Ldm1954 (talk) 14:58, 7 December 2023 (UTC)
  • Comment: I'm sorry, the sources do not show this person passes WP:NACADEMIC. Qcne (talk) 20:26, 10 October 2023 (UTC)

Jiann-Wen Woody Ju, Ph.D., P.E., (Chinese: 朱建文;[1] born 1958) is a Taiwanese-American mechanics educator, researcher, and engineer. He is a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of California, Los Angeles.[2] Ju has worked on damage mechanics, plasticity, and mechanics of composites.[3][4][5] In March 2024, Ju was elected as a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts.[6] He received the Lifetime Achievement Medal at the Third International Conference on Damage Mechanics in 2018,[7] and the EMI Fellow Award at the Engineering Mechanics Institute in 2020.[8] Ju is a member of EU Academy of Sciences,[9] and European Academy of Sciences and Arts.[6] He is a fellow of American Society of Civil Engineers,[citation needed] American Society of Mechanical Engineers,[10] American Concrete Institute,[11] Engineering Mechanics Institute,[8] International Association for Computational Mechanics,[12] and U.S. Association for Computational Mechanics.[13]

Early life and education[edit]

Ju was born in 1958 in Taiwan. He earned a B.S. in Civil Engineering from National Taiwan University in 1980.[2] After graduation, he moved to the United States to begin graduate studies at the University of California, Berkeley.[2] He obtained his Master of Science degree in June 1983.[2][14] After passing his Ph.D. preliminary exam in early 1984, Ju started to pursue his doctoral dissertation and earn his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering in 1986 under the joint supervision of Prof. Karl Pister and Prof. Robert Taylor.[2][14]

Career[edit]

After earning his Ph.D. in 1986, Ju worked as a Postdoctoral Research Engineer and Lecturer in Department of Civil Engineering at University of California, Berkeley.[citation needed] Ju began his independent academic career in 1987 as an Assistant Professor of Department of Civil Engineering and Operations Research School of Engineering and Applied Science at Princeton University.[citation needed] He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1993, and full Professor in 1998 in Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at University of California, Los Angeles.[2] In 1999, he was appointed the Department Chair of Civil and Environmental Engineering.[citation needed] He is currently serving as the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Damage Mechanics.[15]

Awards and honors[edit]

  • EMI Fellow Award, the Engineering Mechanics Institute, 2020.[8]
  • The ICDM-3 Lifetime Achievement Medal, the Third International Conference on Damage Mechanics, 2018.[7]
  • IACM Fellow Award, the International Association for Computational Mechanics, 2010.[12]
