Chitra Wagh is an Indian politician who has served as the president of the Maharashtra Pradesh Mahila Morcha (a division of the Bharatiya Janata Party) since 2022, succeeding Uma Khapre.[1]

Political career[edit]

In 2019, she defected from the National Congress Party's women's wing.[2] She later joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2021, becoming its vice president.[3] The next year, she became the president of its women's league, being elevated due to her campaign against Sanjay Rathod for his alleged links to a suicide case.[1][4]

Personal life[edit]

Chitra has a husband named Kishore.[5]

Controversies[edit]

Feud with Urfi Javed[edit]

On 1 January 2023, Wagh filed a police complaint against the model Urfi Javed for promoting public vulgarity.[6][7] In response, Urfi criticized Wagh for not acknowledging human trafficking in Mumbai and requested her to disclose her earnings as a politician.[8][9] A few days later, Mumbai police requested Urfi to appear for questioning by 14 January that year due to the complaint.[10]

Defamation claim[edit]

In 2021, Maharashtra police registered a non-cognizable offence to Wagh after the head of the state's youth wing, Mehboob Shaikh, filed a complaint claiming that she had tarnished his image by claiming that he had raped a woman.[11]
