More than a century after the end of Norman autonomy in North Africa, the Sicilian admiral Ruggero di Loria occupied the islands of Djerba and Kerkennah in 1284 . It is said that four thousand people were killed during this occupation and six thousand people were captured. He established a fortress to defend the town, and he captured the leader of the Arabs of Al-Jawari in Tripoli in 1285 , and then he released him After in the year 1290 AD. [1]

Rogero di Loria placed the islands of Djerba and karkennah under the autonomy of Pope Bonifacio VIII, who appointed him as ruler over them in the year 1295 in exchange for Paying an annual tax of fifty golden liras.
