Arrest, sentenced and released[edit]

On 1998, Hofer was arrested in Tehran in charge of "having an affair with an Iranian girl" and sex outside marriage between woman Muslim (Vahideh Qassemi, 26-year-old doctor[3]) woman and a non-Muslim man by Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and was sentenced to death Islamic Revolutionary Court and moved to the Evin Prison.[4][5]

After 18 months his death sentence was rejected in the Supreme Court of Iran.[6][7] The IRNA news agency (Iranian government news agency) confirmed Hofer released on a bail of 500 million Iranian toman (105,000 pounds).[8][9] A few weeks after he was re-arrested on charges of "espionage".[10][11][12]

Reactions[edit]

Bodo Hombach, the chief of staff of Gerhard Schroder said: "Hofer will not be going to Germany with us because we respect the laws of Iran. He is in in good physical and mental health."[9]

Saeed Nobari, the Judicial system of the Islamic Republic of Iran spokesman said: "Hofer was re-arrested because of connections with some foreign suspicious elements and fear of escaping from Iran,'' [13][14]

German authorities believe that Hofer arrest is to blackmail the Iranian government or exchange prisoners with Europe.[15][16]
