Subst?[edit]

I think [[Category:Wikipedians in the United Kingdom|{{subst:PAGENAME}}]] should be [[Category:Wikipedians in the United Kingdom|{{PAGENAME}}]] I don't understand what the "subst:" is all about. It didn't work for me!AWhiteC 20:39, 5 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

template[edit]

the green looked really crappy and it wasn't very British. So I changed it to gold and navy - royal colours. Hope nobody objects too much! Deano 17:34, 20 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

New template, I like. That it is very pretty, I think. With it, may the force be. Yoda 4.25pm, 21 December 2005 (UTC)

Northern Ireland flag[edit]

Where on Earth did you get that Northern Ireland flag? As someone from the province, I see nothing to do with Northern Ireland in it: why didn't you just use a real flag? The Great Gavini blether

It's a flag used by supporters of the Northern Ireland football team. It's a Union Flag in the Northern Ireland team colours. I made it because there seemed to be a Userboxen for everyone else in the UK except us. If you want to put the Ulster Banner on it feel free. Keith Greer 11:46, 4 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I was wondering what that was all about... looks pretty cool I must say. Deano (Talk) 14:14, 4 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I wasn't trying to be sectarian in my last post - I'd genuinely never seen it before. - 12:46, 5 February 2006 (UTC)The Great Gavini blether

Re-name category[edit]

I really think this page should be renamed to Category:British Wikipedians or something along those lines... I'm not sure if "British" is PC for Northern Ireland though. The reason I say this is that this page cannot incorporate Category:Scottish Wikipedians or Category:Welsh Wikipedians, because members of both are not in the UK. The use of "in the UK" means that people who consider themselves British but live overseas cannot categorise themselves here. We should follow the example of other categories such as Category:Indian Wikipedians, and provide the ambiguity to enable location/nationality cross. Deano (Talk) 14:25, 4 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Interesting Idea, I don't see why Scottish and Welsh Wikipedians cannot be listed as being in the UK, Scotland and Wales are part of the United Kingdom. (FYI British is the term used for everyone from the United Kingdom, so is fine for Northern Ireland!). Keith Greer 21:30, 4 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well that was my original thinking, but I had a discussion with the people at Category:Scottish Wikipedians and basically they are Scottish, but not in Scotland. They're in America or something. On this basis, they cannot be a subcat of "Wikipedians in the United Kingdom", unless we rename the page to Category:British Wikipedians. Deano (Talk) 17:47, 5 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes I see, British Wikipedians would be a suitable alternative then. You will need to get support form some administrators. Keith Greer 18:01, 5 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Why? Surely consensus here (if we leave it long enough) is good enough? Deano (Talk) 18:55, 5 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

honi soit qui mal y pense[edit]

I always thought this translated as "whoever thinks evil [of something] should be ashamed"... quite a different meaning from that stated. 82.45.23.252 20:28, 30 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The motto of the order of the garter is 'Shame on Those who Think this is Shameful'. Thankyou, horrible history...

According to Order of the Garter article, the translation is: "shame on him who thinks evil of it", which seems to fit with the actual French words used. I have changed the template accordingly. MightyWarrior 23:58, 16 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That translation sounds correct, but oddly the template itself has been changed (as you said), but not the template displayed in the table on this page. Tamino 09:44, 18 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Standardisation[edit]

Wikipedians IN the UK should surely reflect those people who are actually IN the UK. To that end the templates the British, Proud English, Welsh and British-Indian shouldn't really be here, should they? If it is a category of location only, then "lives in" England and "lives in" Wales should both be added.

Also, I added the template 'uk wikipedian' but, for some reason unknown to me, the background gold hasn't copied across from the template. Feel free to fix this if you can. --Mal 07:15, 18 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Subcategories[edit]

Is there a reason the Wales and Scotland subcats aren't appearing in the subcat section? —Whouk (talk) 16:55, 9 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Proud[edit]

Why can you be proud to be English but not to be Scottish?

You can... just create a userbox that says "Proud to be Scottish"! Please sign your comments by the way. --Mal 00:49, 2 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Problem[edit]

I am listed under "{" rather than "T". I don't understand why; I've checked carefully that I have not made any mistakes in typing the category on my page. Tamino 14:47, 14 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It's because you have {{subst:Tamino}} after the pipe. Take out the template and just use "Tamino" (or remove the pipe completely) and you should appear in the right place. —Whouk (talk) 14:56, 14 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Born in[edit]

Could we have a "Born in..." category as well as the "Live in..." category? I'd like this as although I live in Scotland I was born in England. I'm not sure "proud" covers this quite the same way. Toneboy 12:05, 6 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Font size?[edit]

Why did the font size suddenly decrease halfway down all the discussions on this page? Doesn't look very neat! Lradrama 09:25, 19 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It was due to someone's signature having incorrect XHTML. Now fixed. Ian¹³/t 18:16, 31 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Expat Brit user box[edit]

Any support for adding expat user boxes to the cat page, such as {{User expat britons in US}}?

Could I get someone in the area to provide a photo of Quarwood for the article? The address is Station Road, Stow-On-The-Wold, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, GL54 1JU. Thanks. Pkeets (talk) 04:33, 1 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Could someone provide a photo of Downe House, Richmond Hill, London, for the article? The address is 116 Richmond Hill, London. Thanks. Pkeets (talk) 04:33, 1 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
