Subcategorization[edit]

Please Create some Sub-Categories to organise this category better. It is very large. helohe 20:38, 7 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

How about science fiction films by year? Shawnc 20:55, 9 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Science fiction films by year or decade is an obvious solution that solves the problem permanently. As the production of science fiction films is unlikely to cease in the near future any categorization by topic is bound to become very large again. On the other hand categorization by topic may be much more interesting and could be sub-partitioned by time when this becomes a necessity.
Here are some ideas for sub categories:

There is also Category:Submarine_fiction, which contains some SF films. Maybe it would be useful to define intersections of categories as independent categories (Science Fiction / Comedy films) instead of Category:Comedy_science_fiction_films. An intersection could then be a sub-category to both categories.

Categories are mainly used to browse through similar articles. Make decisions about the structure of categories and subcategories that make it easy for users to browse through similar articles.

I will check Wikipedia talk:Categorization for discussions relating to this issue. --Fasten 15:42, 21 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

James Bond films[edit]

Since 8 out of 23 James Bond films are in this category, would it be safe to say that James Bond films are in general science fiction? Also, since most James Bond films have a plethora of gadgets that verge of sceince fiction tech, all of them could be considered science fiction. So, we could just add Category:Science fiction films to the Category:James Bond films, and remove the Science fiction category from those films. Lady Aleena 09:07, 12 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Disney science fiction films[edit]

Another subcategory could be the science fantasy fluff that Disney puts out. Lady Aleena 09:07, 12 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Why move at all?[edit]

Articles in this category should be moved to subcategories when appropriate.

Why?

Does moving not reduce the ability of users to browse similar articles?

I suggest producing appropriate subcategories and then copying articles to them, not moving them.

Stop diffusing and see what is possible[edit]

This is just a table to demonstrate a possible appearance, not the implementation. This uses Wikimedia search and so has these drawbacks:

  • results shown in database order, not alphabetical
  • results shown in search format and not in category format
  • two dimensional table limits searches to combining two categories

Note this user-intuitive browsing only works if editors refrain from diffusing categories!

All the technology is already in wikimedia, and hopefully a polished implementation will be produced soon. -84user (talk) 13:58, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
