Missorted[edit]

Many of the articles in this category are missorted again now. Most of them were once sorted correctly. But DomBot has gone amok, removing properly added sort keys.

The problem originates from a nasty template that adds categories, without any sort keys. That means that all the articles with diacritics in their name do not get properly indexed. Gene Nygaard 05:56, 27 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Mischaracterization. "Many" articles turned out to be five. And one sub-category. (Point of information: Category:Departments of France has more than 200 member articles and/or subcategories.)

Here's what really happened:

I ran a script using AWB to delete Category:Departments of France on articles where the category had already been added by the {{Departments of France}} template. The bot used the edit summary: (Delete renamed category that was individually added to article instead of via the template using AWB). Since the bot was also looking for other errors and correcting them, the edit summary wasn't always accurate. More about that below.

The category was actually deleted by the bot on these pages:

Gene Nygaard reverted the change to the first article, which left four articles in need of reversion: Saône-et-Loire, Haute-Saône, Côte-d'Or, and Ardèche.

Loiret did not need to be reverted as it shouldn't have had the category added independently of the template since no index sorting was required.

Additionally, the bot removed the category from 10 subcategories:

All the changes to the subcategories except one were reverted within 30 minutes of their being made, as I realized the error long before anything was posted on my talk page. I missed one category that was easily fixed after that posting.

Those are all the instances of Category:Departments of France being removed from an article or category.

These are the other pages that the bot edited using the same edit summary and the edits it made:

  • Puy-de-Dôme: AWB changed "[[category:Puy-de-Dôme|*]]" to "[[:Category:Puy-de-Dôme|*]]", correcting a mistake in case. Category:Departments of France did not appear separately on the page; the page was included in the category via the template.
I added the category with the proper index when I was correcting my errors. I had made no error on this page; the correction I made now ensures that the article is sorted correctly in the list.

So what was required was reverting five edits (thanks to the one that Nygaard already reverted, otherwise, it would have been six). That's not a bot gone "amok"; any other issues with the sorting in this category existed before any changes were made by DomBot.DomBot talk ; Chidom talk, owner/operator. 13:12, 27 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
