Untitled[edit]

Hello. I have been trying to get Detroit Techno as a subcategory, but have failed. Could somebody tell me how to do so, as the bands that exist within this category appear on this page - sorry. - - Curious GregorTALK 11:47, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Problem with this category[edit]

Most of the time in the English language (like 99% of the time), when one says "American," one is thinking about something that is related to the United Stats of America. However, a second, broader but technically plausible and probably more politically correct definition means it is related to the Americas. So, it's not really clear which one this category was referring to upon creation, and which one people were thinking about as they continued to link to and include things into this category. Inconsistency already exists: the category description includes a link pointing to American music, which was the location of the now-moved article Music of the Americas, while the pt: interwiki link points to a category specifically referencing Estados Unidos da América. Once exactly what this category is supposed to be about is made clear, American music should point to either Music of the Americas or Music of the United States. Potentially clearer category names may be Category:Music styles of the United States, and Category:Music styles of the Americas. --Bxj (talk) 12:43, 16 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The fact that in three and a half years time no one has answered to this statement is exemplary for the category system in english language Wiki. Often times when i look on category pages in english language Wiki, the last edit is 1-2 years old. Bxj brought up a real issue. For a discussion by wikipedians on the matter of the meaning of the word "america" see here and here. If one likes using "american" for "united states", then the issue for this category here is easy to solve, as it already resembles in large parts a category, which could also be called Category:United States styles of music. One would only need to kick out subcats like Category:Latin_American_styles_of_music. The existing categorisation also indicated that this cat is more likely meant to only include musical styles of the US. -- 068129201223129O9598127 (talk) 15:56, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
