The story is entirely set in the Third Age, covering the year 2941. The events are set 77 years before the main events of the sequel, The Lord of the Rings. Tolkien estimated the time between the destruction of the ring at the end of the Third age and the present day to be about 6000 years. That is the time distance between 4042 BC and AD 1958.
