From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The New York Natural Heritage Areas program was established by law in New York State in 2002.[1] Managers of differing parcels of state-owned lands may designate the parcel to be part of a Natural Heritage Area (NHA) in order to "highlight and ensure the protection of rare animals, rare plants, and significant natural communities on state-owned land". At present, the majority of the areas that have been designated lie within the "Eastern Lake Ontario Barrier Beach and Wetland Complex".
