The IEEE Standards Coordinating Committee was formed to promote the research and development of standards, guidelines, and practices in the field of telemetry technology for meter reading, energy management, and customer premise equipment. This field includes automatic meter reading and energy management through telemetry technologies (telephone, radio, powerline carrier, cable, etc.,) primarily for gas, electric, and water utilities.

The following standards are under the management of the IEEE SCC31 committee IEEE Std 1377 (also see ANSI C12.19), IEEE Std 1701 (also see ANSI C12.18), IEEE Std 1702 (also see ANSI C12.21), IEEE Std 1703 (also see ANSI C12.22), IEEE P1704 and IEEE P1705.
