From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Before 1974 boroughs in the United Kingdom were towns having charters of incorporation. Since 1974 borough status has been conferred on local government districts in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, which may include several towns and rural areas. Districts with borough status are included in Category:Districts of the United Kingdom.

In Greater London the term borough is applied to lower tier local government units, known as metropolitan boroughs between 1900 and 1965, and London Boroughs since 1965. In the major conurbations outside London lower tier or unitary local government units have been known as metropolitan boroughs since 1974.
