[edit] History

For a full history, see History of BMW motorcycles

Originally an aircraft engine manufacturer in the early 20th century and through World War I, BMW introduced the first motorcycle under its name, the R32, in 1923. Although BMW motorcycles have been long associated with their original engine configuration, the flat-twin or boxer engine, the company today manufactures motorcycles in a variety of engine and riding configurations.

[edit] Current production

BMW Motorrad achieved very good business performance in 2007 with record sales, with the most popular model being the R1200GS. In 2008 the company introduced the DOHC Boxer HP2 Sport. [2] The award-winning BMW R 1200 RT is the company's most popular touring motorcycle in the United States, and its K 1200 LT is one of the most luxurious touring motorcycles made. Current production includes a variety of shaft, chain, and belt driven models from 650cc to 1200cc designed for off-road, dual-purpose, sport, and touring activities.

[edit] World Superbikes

In 2007, BMW Motorrad announced their entry to the 2009 World Superbikes season championship. They are now developing the BMW S1000RR, and on 26 June 2008 signed Spanish rider Ruben Xaus for the factory team.[3][4]
