Original titles[edit]

Hello Lord Cornwallis. Firstly let me add my congratulations for the impressive amount of Wikipedia work you have done, especially in adding material about lesser known films of the past. It is an immense achievement over many years.

One matter I would like to raise is the use of original titles in information about foreign-language films. I know that you carefully follow the guidelines about Common name and Use English, but in the case of many older foreign films the issues are not straightforward. I note particularly this section of Naming_conventions_(films)#Foreign-language_films:

"If the film has never been widely released in the English-speaking world, it is not assumed to have a commonly-recognized English name; in such cases, the native name is to be preferred over potentially variant translated titles used in English-language reliable sources."

For me the key issue is not so much the choice of an article title, for which there are always cross-references, but rather the recognisability of a film from its title within an article or filmography. Whichever title Wikipedia editors have decided upon, the fact remains that some people will identify a film by its English title while others will know it only by its original title. The most helpful response is therefore to provide both titles wherever possible, following the examples at WP:NCFF.

My remarks are prompted by recent changes in the article on Charles Spaak, to which we have both contributed. That filmography now has mixture of titles in English and in French, instead of the previous list of the French ones which was admittedly deficient but it was consistent. When such articles need to be edited, I think the best solution is to add a missing title rather than to substitute it for one already there, thereby preserving rather than deleting potentially useful information. This should assist the maximum number of people to recognise which films are which. That is the practice I would like to follow, and indeed more consistently than I may have done in the past. With best wishes, Lampernist (talk) 16:57, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
