Is it a languge, dialect or simply a writing format that used Arbic script to write Tamil?Taprobanus (talk) 22:58, 29 December 2008 (UTC)

It is a variety of Tamil (which you might want to call language or dialect, as you prefer), and a script as well. The script seems to be based on Arabic, but contains some extra letters for Tamil sounds like T, L, N, ZH etc http://web.archive.org/web/20040822180630/www.fas.nus.edu.sg/journal/kolam/vols/kolam5&6/1AOldLit/Arwi.htm Jasy jatere (talk) 11:37, 30 December 2008 (UTC)
So who calls it a language or dialect as it is not official naywhere at any time ? do linguists call it a language or dialect or not enough information is out there ?Taprobanus (talk) 03:35, 1 January 2009 (UTC)
Linguists generally avoid the terms "language" and "dialect" because of the difficulties to tell them apart on linguistic grounds. Most often, it is a political choice to treat something as a language (Urdu, Croatian), or a dialect (Indian English, Hokkien). If you do not want to get entangled in political battles, you can use the word "variety", which is what most linguists do nowadays. Jasy jatere (talk) 15:12, 1 January 2009 (UTC)

Use of military ranks

It is extrmely difficult to find their First Name, Last Name on the internet. Which ever I can find I have added. Most of the internet articles only refer their Nick Name or Aliases which is for example "Ponnamman".

I did find that Y. Kugan on the referenced article so added it, Y is first name initial and Kugan is his surname. "Ponnamman" is not part of the real name at all.

All above cooments apply to all other names too. If you wish, for those articles where there is full name specified you may link them. -Iross1000 (talk) 22:26, 3 January 2009 (UTC).

I believe you were not aware prior to my comments above. "Charles Anthony Seelan" is incorrect. It shuld be "Charles Anthony" or if you wish to include the middle name it is "Charles Lucas Anthony". www.sangam.org/articles/view/?id=165 "Seelan" is an alias and not part of the real name.-Iross1000 (talk) 22:52, 3 January 2009 (UTC)

threats

Hi watchdog,
the following statement looks like a threat to me

Also any addition of such material from GoSL to the BLP, will be met with much addition from this

It's not very severe, but it promises retaliation in the event of adding material. This is a bit beyond "cool editing", and certainly not a good strategy to build consensus. Just wanted to make you aware of that. Furthermore, Fein's reply to the GoSL page is very classy, and I would not object to including it in the article. It is a pity for the GoSL that they cannot express themselves in the way Fein does, but still they try (and fail). Having said all this, I think that the article about Fein has too much emphasis on the SL question. One gets the impression that he is notable just because of that, while he has done a million things before. Jasy jatere (talk) 21:42, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

Jasy, it might be a threat, but only for those who want to violate wikipedia's WP:NPOV. All I am saying is that any addition from a POV source will be met with addition from the person who is being attacked. This is not Threat, but a comment of totality, provided that the former takes place the later will also take place. Also I must say good job on resolving the issue on the article itself. This is exactly what we need in all the articles! Good job Watchdogb (talk) 03:21, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

AFD templates

Only an administrator can remove the AFD template, which should only be removed when the nomination is closed. Don't worry, there's not a snowball's chance that it will be closed as anything other than keep, and it's just a weekend backlog why the nomination has not been closed yet. Re: Lanka Dissent

Hi, Sorry i think we got a bit side tracked in that discussion there.

I don't know if you want to know all this :) and it does get really confusing cos of all the political crossovers, but just background on the whole situation, Mangala Samaraweera was once one of the most powerful politicians in the country, and President Rajapakse's campaign manager. I think the consensus is, after Mahinda was elected President, Mangala wanted a lot of power within the government, but the Mahinda tended to give more power to people very close to him, specially family members like his brothers Gotabhaya Rajapaksa (defense secretary) and Basil Rajapaksa (MP and Mahinda's "right hand man"). Mangala wasn't very happy about that, and Mahinda also saw him as someone who would challenge his power within the ruling party so they fell out by late 2006. Along with the late Sripathi Sooriyarachchi, he formed the SLFP-Mahajana wing to stay in the SLFP, but counter Rajapakse.

They are sort of aligned with the UNP, not because of common policies, but because of a common enemy in the Rajapakse administration. I don't know how long the alliance will last, because Managala used to be one of the most hated people amongst UNPers, and I remember speeches where he used total filth to berate the UNP. The only reason they are together is the UNP will take any help they can get to defeat Mahinda, and Mangala is waiting until he can somehow dislodge the Rajapakse's from the SLFP leadership so he can return to the party, and until then he knows his SLFP-M is an impotent force.

Both the UNP and Mangala aren't pro-LTTE, they probably hate the LTTE as much as Mahinda, but if Mahinda manages to militarily defeat the LTTE, that's going to be bad news for both the UNP and Managala. So they tend to criticize the military offensives and play up the LTTE a little to make Mahinda look bad (this is a typical article [1]).

That's pretty much the context of Lankadissent. Because of Mangala's contacts within the government, they have a lot of inside information about going ons in political circles. But because of his political agenda, their articles tend to carry a significant bias against the government.

My opinion would be, if what they're saying isn't controversial we could just cite them with <ref> tags (but we'd be better off looking for a better source like the Daily Mirror), if there's something that's really controversial we should look for alternate "high-quality sources", and if it's their opinion and it's really important, we could say source it as from the "the anti-government news website Lankadissent.com". --snowolfD4 ( talk / @ ) 23:13, 17 January 2009 (UTC)

I saw a few high quality articles written by accredited historians etc in LankaDissent so in such cases you should not have any problems using it because it is guided by self published portion. Taprobanus (talk) 23:23, 20 January 2009 (UTC)
