I was a former editor on Wikipedia, but decided to leave because I realized I have better things to do in real life. However, I still visit Wikipedia and contribute occasionally. I feel that the person you should thank is _dk. If he didn't bring up the issue to WP:ANI, we would probably be still locked in a stalemate at the WP:3K talk page. Anyway, it's time for a good break, now that the problem has been resolved.

html < p > tag

You changed Wang Can and I do NOT have bad feeling about it. wiki pedia, anyone can contribute. But I'd like to say that by the html language, in the process making a paragraph, < p > is used to making a paragraph, Any lines between < p > and < / p> are aggregated to a paragraph. I mean that we dont have to connect them all and dont have make a LONG line as you did in Wang Can. See User_talk:Dcoetzee. (Gauge00 (talk) 15:13, 25 August 2012 (UTC))

Hi, there. The reason I changed them into a long line is purely on account of the fact that they do not appear as a full paragraph. I saw that the text had line breaks at almost every sentence - I don't know whether you intended for them to be aggregated between < p> and < /p> (as you mentioned on Dcoetzee's talk page), but since they had not, I thought it would be better to condense the single lines into a paragraph for the public's viewing. For example:

In 194, Wang Can went to Jingzhou (荆州, present day Hubei and Hunan) to seek a position under the governor Liu Biao. However, Liu Biao did not favor Wang Can as the latter looked pallid and sickly.
After the death of Liu Biao in 208, his son Liu Cong (劉琮) was persuaded by Wang Can to surrender to Cao Cao.

Which I merged into one paragraph as:

In 194, Wang Can went to Jingzhou (荆州, present day Hubei and Hunan) to seek a position under the governor Liu Biao. However, Liu Biao did not favor Wang Can as the latter looked pallid and sickly. After the death of Liu Biao in 208, his son Liu Cong (劉琮) was persuaded by Wang Can to surrender to Cao Cao.

I don't think it appears any less clear in terms of displaying the diffs, but just that it is neater as a unified paragraph. I appreciate your attempt to save storage space in terms of diffs, but what Dcoetzee said indicates that adding in the line breaks does not make the diffs smaller in size, since a full copy of every revision is saved (rather than just the diffs) - to put it into Dcoetzee's own words, "the database stores the full text of every revision, although the data may be compressed".

He also seems to agree with me on the stylistic preference for paragraphs over single lines ("Your line breaks have little to no effect on this, but are unconventional and cause your discussion to occupy more vertical space on large screens. For that reason I don't recommend it"). This is a fairly superficial distinction that I have made, and it is hardly an issue. Your system of line breaks DOES have benefits in terms of displaying the diffs between edits, but is probably not as useful to an English audience in comparison to paragraphs. I will have to check Wikipedia's manual of style to see whether the organisation has a preference for paragraphs.

I would suggest that you try making full paragraphs instead of single lines (as Dcoetzee suggests), since this seems to save no more space and is simply easier to read. Don't worry about making them too long to read comfortably - if an editor or reader thinks a paragraph is too long or short, they will say so.

I'd like follow as others do, making full LONG line. Yes, maybe after one month or two I would do edit the ways you did, like making LONG line. The thing is that you also do not have to make many-line-to-single conversion. I also dont have to long-single-line-to-many-line conversion intentionally. And I'd like to say that it is incorrect (though I dont know exactly) that the database stores the full text of every revision, although the data may be compressed

Dong Cheng

He was originally a subordinate general of Niu Fu during the late Han Dynasty. After Niu Fu was killed by his ally Huchi'er and Emperor Xian escaped the hands of Li Jue and Guo Si, leaving Chang'an for Luoyang in 195, Dong Cheng allied himself with Xu Huang, Zhu Zhi and the White Wave Bandits (led by Han Xian and Yang Feng) to protected the journey of the emperor from the pursuing armies of Li Jue and Guo Si.

In early 199, Dong Cheng claimed to have received a secret edict issued by Emperor Xian (hidden in a belt), and he entered into a conspiracy with Liu Bei, Zhong Ji (种輯), and Wang Fu (王服) to assassinate Cao. But in 200, Dong Cheng's conspiracy was discovered, and Dong Cheng, along with Zhong Ji and Wang Fu, were executed and their families were exterminated - this included Emperor Xian's pregnant consort, Dong Cheng's daughter, who was killed despite the emperor's attempt to intercede. Liu Bei was later defeated by Cao Cao and forced to flee to Yuan Shao's territory.

I comments. Just comments. Niu Fu was killed by his ally Huchi'er in not important. Why should a death of Niu Fu is added to Dong Cheng page? And Niu Fu and Huchier are not allies. One is another's subornidate. And Niu Fu did not died in 195. Therefore the sentence is incorrect. Furthermore death of NiuFu has nothing to do with the escapement of Emperor Xian. Therefore they sould not exist in a single sentence.

Fact A: Dong Cheng aided Emperor, Fact B: Dong Cheng allied to white bandits to protect Empeor. FOr these two facts, Fact B is missleading because here whether or not DOng cheng allied someone is NOT IMPORTANT. The most important thing is the fact that Dong CHeng escorted emperor. What method DOng cheng choused to protect Emperor is NOT important. Further more, Thgought Yang Feng was once a white bandit, at those time Yang Feng was a general of Li Jue. And Zhu Zhi? Who is it? And further more if Yang Feng and Han XIan was to included in the DOng Cheng article, why Zhang Yang and other barbarian tribes and others are excluded? And Xu Huang was a general of Yang Feng, then why should mere a gneral, should be inserted?

To answer your questions:
  • I pulled the two lines into a single paragraph because they refer to one distinct period in Wang Can's life: his unremarkable service under Liu Biao. I've made this distinction because of the uneventful nature of this service, rather than the time period.
  • In terms of saving storage space, I believe that the Wikimedia Foundation is not facing any problems with the storage space of their articles. IF they had an issue with storage, they would probably post guidelines for preserving their storage space for the general editing public to use. Since they haven't, I don't think you need to worry about minimising the storage space used.
  • The details surrounding Niu Fu's death are important because the article did not previously state how or why Dong Cheng had gone to aid the emperor - in this case, I have amended it to explain Niu Fu's assassination by Huchi'er. Corrections for the date of Niu Fu's death and Huchi'er's status in comparison to Niu Fu can and should be made, and I will do so after this response is finished.
  • The reasoning for mentioning that the White Wave Bandits were involved is that it was a concerted effort between Dong Cheng and the allies involved; while individuals such as Yufuluo opposed Li Jue and Guo Si, they did not make any effort to help protect the emperor. The bandits, by contrast, actively coordina. In this, you are correct in pointing out that Zhang Yang should be included; again,I will add this immediately.
  • I have included Yang Feng because he had abandoned Li Jue in favour of supporting Han Xian at this time. Zhu Zhi refers to the general who left Zhang Ji's service for the White Wave Bandits, then served under Yuan Shu, Lu Bu and Yuan Shu again. I have noticed that this Zhu Zhi lacks an article, as he is a different Zhu Zhi to the one who serves under Wu during the Three Kingdoms period. I will change the link to create a dead one, which I will turn into a separate article when possible. Since Xu Huang is a notable figure in the Later Han and Three Kingdoms periods, I think he should be mentioned, but I will clarify that he is Yang Feng's subordinate.

Then you said his subordinte, then what means? "Dong Cheng's subordinate"?, if not "Niu Fu's subordinate"? You made an ambiguity. I suspect your native lanauge is not Enlish. You made another false statement that Yang Feng because he had abandoned Li Jue in favour of supporting Han Xian at this time. Yang Feng was a yellow turban bandit, then he served Li Jue. Afterwards he tried to assassinate the Li Jue but failed, and FLED. The reason why Yang Feng left Li Jue has no relations with Han Xian. He just became a bandit which he was. The fact remains that Dong Cheng was NOT summoned by the emperor while under Niu Fu's service; he was summoned after the latter had died. Hence why Niu Fu's death should be mentioned.
The Japanese Wikipedia SHOULD mention Niu Fu's death, because it IS relevent to Dong Cheng. So yes, I DO think it's stupid, and if you are capable enough with Japanese, I would strongly suggest that you change it.
The ambiguity exists because of the awkwardness of the English language - "Niu Fu was killed by Niu Fu's subordinate Huchi'er" is an unconventional English construction.
I will reword this, but you should not even dare to criticise MY English capability. For someone who has repeatedly affirmed that you have a poor grasp on English, you have absolutely NO RIGHT to mock anyone else's English capability. I am a native speaker of English living in the United Kingdom, and your moronic assumptions about my so-called "poor-English" will not be tolerated; continue, and I will take you to the admins again. As you said, no history book said that Dong Cheng was summoned by the emperor while under Niu Fu's service. HOWEVER it does not mean Dong Cheng was not summoned by Emperor while under Niu Fu. Where is the source of the section below in the article of Zhong Hui's Rebellion

Sima Zhao was reported to have commented on Zhong Hui's rebellion:"Though he was an able strategist, he held too great an ambition. He accidentally stumbled on rebellion without thinking and was murdered with his clan."

I am afraid that I have failed to find such lines in both biographies of Zhong Hui and Sima Zhao and Zizhi Tongjian. So where does the lines come from?——Heinrich ⅩⅦ von Bayern (talk) 03:34, 9 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi there. I believe I took that quote off another article, which I can no longer identify. http://koei.wikia.com/wiki/Zhong_Hui quotes the line, though rather by Chen Shou rather than Sima Zhao, which I can best estimate is a loose translation of a line from the San Guo Zhi. It may not even necessarily be found in Zhong Hui's or Sima Zhao's biography; there is a slim possibility that it may be in the biography for Jiang Wei (though not in Deng Ai's, for which I do possess a translation). However, since I cannot read Classical Chinese (or even modern standard Chinese), I cannot provide further defense for the quote; if you cannot find anything on it, it would probably be best to delete the line. UK-style dates

Hello Benjitheijneb. Thank you taking the time to express your interest and for giving me the opportunity to explain.

Most of the editing work I undertake on Wikipedia is to improve rather than to correct. While Wikipedia's manual of style allows both "day, month, year" and "month, day, year" formats, depending on context, the latter style is generally regarded as pertinent to American subjects only. In the US, m/d/y is so prevalent that it extends to the all-numeric form (eg 3/11/2013 for today - 11 March 2013), causing endless confusion to much of the rest of the world, where the logical progression of day-month-year seems perfectly natural and the half-forward, half-backward style favoured by the US irredeemably clumsy. On several occasions I've encountered a Wikipedia article in which a single date has been correctly quoted in one part of the article and incorrectly in another, as if an editor has expanded the all-numeric version without considering whether d/m/y or m/d/y had been used.

I don't claim that d/m/y is (or should be) a British standard in the sense of it being universally used. Nevertheless it is standard practice in many organisations, including the government and BBC, though even there we see occasional lapses into colloquialism, eg "the election will be on May the 5th". During the past 40 years I've received hundreds of letters from various business organisations in the UK and only a handful of them used the m/d/y date format, almost all from companies with American parentage. Historically, m/d/y was much more widespread in the UK and seems to have reached its peak somewhere between 1850 and 1950. One can get a sense of this trend from casual inspection of inscriptions on gravestones: more-recent examples tend to be in d/m/y format. The UK press has been very slow to follow the trend. From memory, The Observer was certainly using d/m/y in the 1970s, The Independent has always used d/m/y and The Guardian switched to d/m/y a couple of years ago. Quite a few other newspapers stick to m/d/y, apparently because it's what they've always done. And then some Wikipedia editors also slavishly follow the form that has previously been written in a newspaper article.

My approach to this matter is to think of sense versus nonsense. The expression "11 March 2013" is merely a contraction of "the eleventh day of March in the year 2013". Since word order is fundamentally important to English syntax, any change in word order risks misunderstanding. Even while "March 11, 2013" can be readily understood, it is syntactically jumbled. But leave off the year and you are left with "March 11". Now when you see "Best before March 11", does it mean "11 March" or "March 2011"?

It is perhaps the influence the US, including computer software that fails to recognise time and date format settings in Windows, that allows the m/d/y style to endure in the UK, if only on a small scale. But I'm sure they will see the light sometime during the next hundred years or so, and the nation that still measures engine size in cubic inches, still measures temperature in Fahrenheit and still defines recipes in cups (!) will catch up with the rest of the world.

Spotlight - Simplified article translation

Wikiproject Medicine started translating simplified articles in February 2014. We now have 45 simplified articles ready for translation, of which the first on African trypanosomiasis or sleeping sickness has been translated into 46 out of ~100 languages. This list does not include the 33 additional articles that are available in both full and simple versions.

Our goal is to eventually translate 1,000 simplified articles. This includes:

We are looking for subject area leads to both create articles and recruit further editors. We need people with basic medical knowledge who are willing to help out. This includes to write, translate and especially integrate medical articles.

I've (CFCF) taken on the role of community organizer for this project, and will be working with this until December. Wikimania 2014

For those going to London in a month's time (or those already nearby) there will be at least one event for all medical editors, on Thursday August 7th. See the event page, which also summarizes medicine-related presentations in the main conference. Please pass the word on to your local medical editors.

Integration progress

There has previously been some resistance against translation into certain languages with strong Wikipedia presence, such as Dutch, Polish, and Swedish.
What was found is that thre is hardly any negative opinion about the the project itself; and any such critique has focused on the ways that articles have being integrated. For an article to be usefully translated into a target-Wiki it needs to be properly Wiki-linked, carry proper citations and use the formatting of the chosen target language as well as being properly proof-read. Certain large Wikis such as the Polish and Dutch Wikis have strong traditions of medical content, with their own editorial system, own templates and different ideas about what constitutes a good medical article. For example, there are not MEDRS (Polish,German,Romanian,Persian) guidelines present on other Wikis, and some Wikis have a stronger background of country-specific content.

  • Swedish
    Translation into Swedish has been difficult in part because of the amount of free, high quality sources out there already: patient info, for professionals. The same can be said for English, but has really given us all the more reason to try and create an unbiased and free encyclopedia of medical content. We want Wikipedia to act as an alternative to commercial sources, and preferably a really good one at that.
    Through extensive collaborative work and by respecting links and Sweden specific content the last unintegrated Swedish translation went live in May.
  • Dutch
    Dutch translation carries with it special difficulties, in part due to the premises in which the Dutch Wikipedia is built upon. There is great respect for what previous editors have created, and deleting or replacing old content can be frowned upon. In spite of this there are success stories: Anafylaxie.
  • Polish
    Translation and integration into Polish also comes with its own unique set of challenges. The Polish Wikipedia has long been independent and works very hard to create high quality contentfor Polish audience. Previous translation trouble has lead to use of unique templates with unique formatting, not least among citations. Add to this that the Polish Wikipedia does not allow template redirects and a large body of work is required for each article.

  • Arabic
    The Arabic Wikipedia community has been informed of the efforts to integrate content through both the general talk-page as well as through one of the major Arabic Wikipedia facebook-groups: مجتمع ويكيبيديا العربي, something that has been heralded with great enthusiasm.
Integration guides

Integration is the next step after any translation. Despite this it is by no means trivial, and it comes with its own hardships and challenges. Previously each new integrator has needed to dive into the fray with little help from previous integrations. Therefore we are creating guides for specific Wikis that make integration simple and straightforward, with guides for specific languages, and for integrating on small Wikis.

Feature – Ebola articles

During August we have translated Disease and it is now live in more than 60 different languages! To help us focus on African languages Rubric has donated a large number of articles in languages we haven't previously reached–so a shout out them, and Ian Henderson from Rubric who's joined us here at Wikipedia. We're very happy for our continued collaboration with both Rubric and Translators without Borders!

New roles and guides!

At Wikimania there were so many enthusiastic people jumping at the chance to help out the Medical Translation Project, but unfortunately not all of them knew how to get started. That is why we've been spending considerable time writing and improving guides! They are finally live, and you can find them at our home-page!

New sign up page!

We're proud to announce a new sign up page at WP:MTSIGNUP! The old page was getting cluttered and didn't allow you to speficy a role. The new page should be easier to sign up to, and easier to navigate so that we can reach you when you're needed!

Style guides for translations

Translations are of both full articles and shorter articles continues. The process where short articles are chosen for translation hasn't been fully transparent. In the coming months we hope to have a first guide, so that anyone who writes medical or health articles knows how to get their articles to a standard where they can be translated! That's why we're currently working on medical good lede criteria! The idea is to have a similar peer review process to good article nominations, but only for ledes.

Bold, revert, DISCUSS

Please read WP:BRD: be bold, revert, then discuss. Not be bold, revert and then revert again. Repeated reverts is behavior that can lead to edit wars.
Categorization of Jewish people and people of Jewish descent has been hotly debated for years on Wikipedia and the current consensus is that being Jewish or of Jewish decent doesn't necessary make a person Middle Eastern. It is ideological to believe so. If you want to gain consensus for your point of view, initiate a discussion at Talk:American Jews or Wikipedia Talk:WikiProject Judaism. There needs to be a new consensus to make the change you propose to make. Liz Read! Talk! 21:04, 30 June 2015 (UTC)

Thank you for clarifying, might I suggest that you briefly explain your reverts in the future? As you say, "be Bold, Revert, Discuss", rather than reverting without explanation or discussion, as I believe you did. I will take the issue to the WikiProject page, and hopefully that will provide a precedent. On that note, can you show me where this current consensus you speak of was determined? I am yet to find a place where such a consensus has been reached, though I have of course seen it quite frequently discussed. If it is current consensus, I would like to see where it became such.
