Relation to Trisectrix of Maclaurin[edit]

What is the difference between Trisectrix and Trisectrix of Maclaurin? --NeoUrfahraner 07:11, 16 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Moving to Limaçon trisectrix[edit]

It seems (based on refs to be added) that the terminology has changed slightly since 1911 and the term 'trisectrix' now refers to any curve that can be used to trisect an angle rather than just the one in the form of a limaçon. Therefore I'm moving the original article to Limaçon trisectrix and changing this one to state the modern definition with examples. As a side effect, all the text from 1911 will disappear.--RDBury (talk) 15:39, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It looks like the issue is more complex than I thought, but it still seems to me that Limaçon trisectrix should be its own article even though some, but not all modern sources call this simply a trisectrix. Those that do acknowledge that the term can refer to the type of curve ('a trisectrix') or the limaçon ('the trisectrix'), which is confusing. The Encyclopédie des Formes Mathématiques Remarquables uses the term Trisector limacon, so it appears that there is no real standard terminology. So, in the interest of clarity in the names of articles, I'm going to take 'trisectrix' to mean the type of curve and 'limaçon trisectrix' (as used in [1]) to mean the limaçon. Interlinks will be added to point readers to the right article when necessary.--RDBury (talk) 18:31, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
