Anti-Semitic?[edit]

Accounts like Sir Hugh are described as "such anti-Semitic tales". However is the story anti-Semitic? If the common people thought that a boy was killed by a Jew, that may be correct or a mistake, I am not convinced that it is inherently anti-Jewish.122.59.167.152 (talk) 00:15, 20 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The story's only villain is a Jew, and the story's only Jew is a villain. A single character is used as a representation for an entire group, in order to negatively portray that group (cf. stereotype). So yes, it's definitely anti-Semitic. Stories like "Sir Hugh" were used to undermine the dignity and respectability of Jews, and formed the basis for blood libel. Ibadibam (talk) 01:03, 20 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
