A legend?[edit]

The author tries very hard to disprove what he calls a 'legend', namely that Palestrina composed the mass in order to show to the council of Trent's fathers that polyphonic music could be fruitfully used in liturgical celebrations. The writer is not convincing. On the contrary there are enough indications that the 'legend' may well be true to facts. Enough documented evidence, including the fact that Palestrina met pope Marcel II who showed or expressed displeasure when polyphonic music was performed in his presence: he found it unliturgical.
