In 1980, I was a student of Jeff Dinitz, and I recall that he had done work on constructing high-dimensional room squares. In an n x n room square, there are n+1 symbols, and in each row and in each column, there are pairs of symbols such that across each row, or down each column, each symbol occurs exactly once, and, each pair of numbers occurs in the overall construction exactly once.
