Vivian Tu (Born March 20, 1994) is an American businesswoman and author. She is the founder and CEO of Your Rich BFF,[1] a multi-media company with an emphasis on financial education for the next generation.[2] Tu has been named a Forbes 30 under honoree[3] for her content creation. Her book, Rich AF: The Winning Money Mindset that Will Change Your Life became a New York Times bestseller in 2024.[4]

Early Life and Education[edit]

Tu was born in Baltimore, Maryland as the only child to Chinese immigrant parents.[5] She moved to Chicago to pursue her bachelors degree at the University of Chicago, graduating in 2016 with dual degrees in public policy and environmental studies.

Tu is trilingual, speaking English, Shanghainese and Mandarin.

Career[edit]

In 2016, Tu started her career as a trader at J.P. Morgan, which kickstarted her passion for financial education.[6] Tu traded stocks in the industrial, materials, and energy sectors.[7] After leaving J.P. Morgan, she transitioned into a digital media sales role at BuzzFeed.[8] Tu started making videos on TikTok in 2021, her first video went viral and by the end of the week she had amassed over 100,000 followers. Since then, Tu has amassed over 7 million followers across social media,[9] crediting her friend based approach to her success: "I convey information in a way that is literally like you were my college roommate: We're having coffee on our couch in the morning and we're just talking casually like two friends.[7]"

Tu is represented by William Morris Endeavor.[10]

In 2023, Tu launched her podcast Networth & Chill,[11] which was met with critical acclaim.[12]

On December 26, 2023, Tu released her first book Rich AF: The Winning Money Mindset that Will Change Your Life becoming an instant New York Times bestseller under both the Business[4] and the Advice, How To & Miscellaneous[13] categories.

Awards & Recognition[edit]

Since 2021, Tu has been named to the Forbes 30 under 30[3] and Forbes Top Creators lists.[14] She has also been nominated for a Webby award[15] and multiple Shorty Awards,[16] including a finalist nomination for Branded Series.[17] In 2023, Tu was a Meta Visionary Voices[18] award winner. In 2024, Tu won Best Personal Finance Influencer presented by Bankrate.[19] That same year, she also won a Visionary Voices award from TikTok,[20] highlighting prominent and impactful AAPI content creators on the platform.

Her podcast has been nominated for the iHeartRadio Podcast Awards.[12]

Tu has spoken at public facing events such as AdWeek,[21] Money 20/20[22] and the Wall Street Journal: Future of Everything Festival.[23]

Partnerships[edit]

Since 2023, Tu has been a title partner of SoFi bank and helped the launch the Face of Finance campaign,[24] correcting AI gender bias. She has also held long standing partnership with the clothing retailer Marshalls.
