Historic Pictures

A plea for pictures of US historic places in and around Miami, that is. I'm with WP:NRHP and live in Florida, and am trying to get photos of all the state sites. But being in the northern part of the state, it'll be some time before I can make it down there.

Dade County (I know, but I grew up in Miami in the 60's and 70's, and it'll always be just Dade County to me) has the most sites in the state, over 160. A few articles have pictures, but most don't. I have a checklist of sorts here. Any help y'all can provide would be appreciated. And, hey, an excuse to get away from the computer and out and about in the sun, not a bad thing, doncha know. :) -Ebyabe 20:29, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

Importance

Who rates the importance of these articles and on what criteria are they rated? JDS2005 21:42, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

The articles are judged based on the Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Release Version Criteria and are judged mainly by WikiProject Miami members but anyone can give and update ratings. Right now, I am giving preliminary assessments of all the WikiProject Miami articles, but the ratings can be debated later because they of their subjective nature.--Jorfer 03:00, 22 February 2007 (UTC)

Scope of the Project

I think people need to make a decision on what the exact scope of this project is. Is it Miami, the Greater Miami Area, Miami-Dade County, or South Florida? For example, I wrote an article on the Holocaust Memorial on Miami Beach, and it was tagged and assessed as part of this project. It's quite clearly on Miami Beach, which is not part of Miami, but is considered to be part of the Greater Miami Area. So what is the boundary going to be? JDS2005 20:49, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

We are still debating that. Right now, we are focusing on Miami, but I think we all want to enlarge the project to encompass South Florida. The reason I have not changed it is because it is drastic for such a young WikiProject, and it is a hassle.--Jorfer 03:06, 22 February 2007 (UTC)

Subprojects

Hey everyone. I don't want to go messing around with coding that you all don't want messed with.. but its much wiser to transclude a page (like on your subprojects, under "ideal article") using the following syntax: {{article name}}. Change of Name

Shoudnt this WP be changed to WikiProject:South Florida since it talks about all of South Florida not just Miami. Arigont 21:23, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

I think that would have been too narrow a focus. Look at the Dallas/Fort Worth WikiProject where they did it on the whole metropolitan area. I decided to expand the scope (I did not change the title because it would have been too time consuming to change everything) because I felt that the line between the counties were almost indistinguisable at times (i.e. sports teams like the Florida Marlins). If you do not have a map with the county line you would not know where Dade ends and Broward begins unless you lived on the county line like me.--Jorfer 19:55, 22 April 2007 (UTC)
I get what you mean, and I agree that we should leave it a South Florida thing, but it looks funny having a Boca Raton page with a category reading "Wikiproject: Miami." As time consuming as changing the name may be, we might as well change the project to 'Wikiproject: South Florida.'Skillz187 02:53, 25 April 2007 (UTC)
I checked to see examples of it being done before and from what I can gather it has never been attempted before (from all the city WikiProjects and other ones I have seen so it would be going into uncharted territory where we may be left with a mess and no going back.--Jorfer 00:19, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

Article abandoned in user space

User:Seedvp/Sunset Elementary School, about a school in Miami, probably could be moved to main space. The user has not posted since September 22, and so is probably not active. Change of Project Name

If this project is focusing on South Florida, why is it named WP Miami? Miami is not the center of South Florida when South Florida is composed of 3 counties and Miami is in just one of them. WP Florida is culling their articles and tagging a number of them WP Miami. I think a name change is in order not to confuse people. KnightLago 15:46, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

See discussion on the top of this page for the answer to your question. If you can change the name of the project without creating a mess than go ahead, but it involves changes of all the subpages and categories, and when I looked it had never been done before (either a wikiproject started off as a regional project or it didn't). I decided to expand the scope of the project because Miami was too specific of a project, but I think a name change would be too much of a hassle.--Jorfer 21:29, 2 December 2007 (UTC)
For what it's worth, {{TampaWikiproject}} and {{WikiProject Jacksonville}} are also covering their respective MSAs. While I would like to see names that better reflect the scopes of all three projects, sometimes we have to live with what we have. -- Donald Albury 21:51, 2 December 2007 (UTC)
I understand what you are both saying, but it is pretty clear that most people think the name should change and the only thing holding people up is the work invovled. I am not going to do anything hasty, I'll first try and recruit some more help from editors experienced in this. Also, I think some of the work, such as substituting templates, could be done by a bot. If I find that it is too much work I will leave it alone. But I might as well try and see how hard it would be first. I will comment here and then wait a day or two before doing anything if I go that route. KnightLago 21:59, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. Botched move of Miami-Dade County article

Miami-Dade County, Florida was moved to Miami-Wade County, Florida, and then a new Miami-Dade County, Florida article was created by copying over the original article. As a result, the current Miami-Dade County article has no history prior to the move, while the article with the full history remains under the Miami-Wade County name. I protected the Miami-Dade County version, and it needs to be deleted so that the version with the full history can be moved back, but it looks like at least one legitimate edit was made on the history-less version, so I have hesitated to delete it. I have to go to work, so can someone else figure what to do about any legitimate edits to the new page before deleting it and moving back the correct page. -- Donald Albury 11:08, 2 July 2010 (UTC)

I went ahead and moved the history-less version of Miami-Dade County to Miami-Dade County, Florida (bad), and restored the version with the full history to its proper name. I have started up a new article about said school, Hammocks Middle School under my user until the page is completely finished, or at least releasable. I borrowed the template and most of the text from Felix Varela High School for guidance. It struck me that this school wasn't anywhere on Wikipedia, because I attended this school three years ago. Marlins?

I think someone should make a WikiProject for the Florida Marlins. Florida Marlins have alot of related articles beacause alot of people and prostects have played for the Marlins. Maybe it can be a related Project with WikiProject Miami. Spongie555 (talk) 03:23, 24 August 2010 (UTC)

Miami articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Miami articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. There's a lot that can be done

Just in the wave of my recent enthusiasm I've already seen several Miami related articles that are good but could easily be improved greatly. I just created the Port of Miami Deep Dredge Project because it didn't really fit in the short Port of Miami article above the picture of the cruise ships. I also added the high rise thing to the history article. There's some cool stuff happening there, and it sucks that the unemployment is so high and that I don't speak fluent spanish, but I think something like the port of miami improvements could turn that place around again. US Collaboration reactivated & Portal:United States starting next

Casliber recently posted a suggestion on the talk page for WikiProject United States about getting the US Wikipedians Collaboration page going again in an effort to build up articles for GA through FA class. See Wikipedia:U.S. Wikipedians' notice board/USCOTM. After several days of work from him the page is up and ready for action. A few candidates have already been added for you to vote on or you can submit one using the directions provided. If you are looking for inspiration here is a link to the most commonly viewed articles currently under the scope of Wikiproject United States. There are tons of good articles in the various US related projects as well so feel free to submit any article relating to US topics (not just those under the scope of WPUS). This noticeboard is intended for ‘’’All’’’ editors working on US subjects, not just those under WPUS.

The next item I intend to start updating is Portal:United States if anyone is interested in helping. Again this is not specific to WPUS and any help would be greatly appreciated to maximize visibility of US topics. The foundation has already been established its just a matter of updating the content with some new images, biographies and articles. Port of Miami Tunnel GA nomination

A few months a go it was a terrible article, nearly bad enough that a deletion nomination would not have surprised me, but my major renovations of it, which in turn got it more attention and procurement from other editors, made it a completely different article and look at it now! it still has a lot of improvement potential, and a ton of future potential as it develops, I wouldn't be surprised if it could eventually even become a featured article, but that will depend on how much of an impact/well known the tunnel becomes, not just how well it's written (not many FA's are on obscure topics). I'm sure right now as it stands it probably would not make it, but it's not far short of being worthy for a nomination. Daniel Christensen (talk) 03:48, 29 March 2011 (UTC)

Florida or Miami chapter?

Do we have enough active wikipedians in Florida to form a chapter? I've created an entry for Florida at the Wikimedia United States Chapters Council page. FAR for History of Miami

History of Miami is under Featured Article Review, because it does not meet featured standards. I'm surprised it was nominated, even for 2006 standards, but at any rate at this point it does not nearly meet FAC. This is not just because of the tag, but speaking of which, come on. Suggestion to add this project to the supported projects list of WikiProject United States

It has been suggested that WikiProject Florida and some of its child projects may be inactive or semi active and it might be beneficial to add them to the supported projects list of WikiProject United States. After reviewing the project page and the talk page of this project it seems as though this project is pretty active but I thought I would leave a note here anyway just in case. Horacio Cambeiro

Horacio Cambeiro is a journalist who has worked in Miami.

The articles by the same author about two other people have been shown to have dubious sourcing; and when I started to look at this one, it too soon seemed suspicious.

In the space of half an hour or so, I:

  • Attached a COI template (see the article's talk page for why)
  • Marked six links for sources as dead
  • Found that one page given as a source had been given a fictional title and didn't say what it was claimed to say (edit)
  • Found that Cambeiro's name appeared nowhere within the sole source given for nomination of an award (a claim that gives rise to about half the WP article) (edit)
  • Replaced a fictional title with the actual title (edit)

Of course there is nothing inherently suspicious about dead links. It's not a contributor's fault that a website removes a page or removes itself. And I haven't googled for newer addresses of moved pages, or even looked in the Wayback Machine. But as for now, the article has a grand total of two sources with working links. Both of these are in Spanish, and the majority of the "dead" (but perhaps still alive, somewhere) links are in Spanish too. Unfortunately I don't read Spanish, and I also don't trust Google Translate or similar to do the job for me. Proposed deletion of SkinPro

The article SkinPro has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

all the sources seem to be press releases or otherwise from this Miami company itself. There is nothing that indicates that the company is notable. I couldn't find anything independent or reliable in web searches either. See WP:CORP

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? Hi all, I've boldly updated your project's peer review page (Wikipedia:WikiProject Miami/Peer review) by updating the instructions and archiving old reviews.

The new instructions use Wikipedia's general peer review process (WP:PR) to list peer reviews. Your project's reviews are still able to be listed on your local page too.

The benefits of this change is that review requests will get seen by a wider audience and are likely to be attended to in a more timely way (many WikiProject peer reviews remain unanswered after years). The Wikipedia peer review process is also more maintained than most WikiProjects, and this may help save time for your active members.

I've done this boldly as it seems your peer review page is pretty inactive and I am working through around 90 such similar peer review pages. Please feel free to discuss below - please ping me ({{u|Tom (LT)}}) in your response.

User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

OPEN CALL FOR A WIKIPEDIAN IN RESIDENCE AT PAMM

The Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) is seeking a creative and driven Wikipedian In Residence (WIR) to improve coverage of their collections on Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and Wikidata. PAMM is a modern and contemporary art museum dedicated to collecting and exhibiting international art of the 20th and 21st centuries.

The WIR would be helping PAMM establish Wikipedia programming institution-wide. The Wikipedian In Residence will work closely with the digital team at PAMM with access to curators and staff for support and training.

On Wikidata, the WIR will add structured data and expand items about painting objects, artists, collections, installations, exhibits, and events. On Wikimedia Commons, photos of living artists will be taken and added with appropriate categorization. The WIR will also engage community through edit-a-thons, virtual events, and staff trainings.

They WIR will have a dedicated, expert strategic advisor helping them onboard into the role and plan their activities with weekly check-ins and ongoing support.
