Falsifying a theory[edit]

Thank you for your edit of the Compton scattering page changing falsifying into disproving. The word falsifying was used in the sense of Popper's falsification criterion, in which a crucial experiment is allegedly demonstrating the theory to be false. I could agree with your edit if it is meant to express that the notions of truth and falsity are not applicable to physical theories (since, instead, only a theory's applicability on a certain domain of experience can reasonably be asserted). However, if it is not thought to be useful to mix this problem with the issue discussed on the Compton scattering page it would seem preferable to use falsification because this term is well-known amongst physicists.WMdeMuynck (talk) 23:32, 9 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
