The word I have chosen is 'Dravidian', from Drāviḍa, the adjectival form of Draviḍa. This term, it is true, has sometimes been used, and is still sometimes used, in almost as restricted a sense as that of Tamil itself, so that though on the whole it is the best term I can find, I admit it is not perfectly free from ambiguity. It is a term which has already been used more or less distinctively by Sanskrit philologists, as a generic appellation for the South Indian people and their languages, and it is the only single term they ever seem to have used in this manner. I have, therefore, no doubt of the propriety of adopting it.

IPA Tidbit[edit]

Shouldn't the IPA of Tamil be /t̪amɪɻ/ instead of /t̪amiɻ/? If you listen to the audio and check the English approximation on the Tamil IPA page, it fits the bill of an /ɪ/ instead of an /i/.

It isn't /ɪ/ since that's not a phoneme of Tamil. Phonemically it is /i/. It does sound to my ear an awful lot like [ɪ]. And having looked at the spectrograph it is, of course, somewhere in between, but closer to [ɪ] by my judgement. AquitaneHungerForce (talk) 22:09, 20 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

In the list of official countries, subdivisions in the box, Northern and Eastern provinces of SriLanka needs to be added along with the Indiam state of Tamil Nadu. BaalaAnandh93 (talk) 20:01, 14 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Already done Northern/Eastern Sri Lanka is already listed under region, and Sri Lanka is already listed under official language.

If you're referring to the second infobox titled "Constitutionally recognised languages of India ", this is a separate template which appears on multiple pages about major Indian languages. Tamil Language/Region - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tamil_language[edit]

Hi Many thanks to all who have contributed to the above page. Under region there is Sri Lanka Northern province and Eastern province. As shown in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_Tamils_of_Sri_Lanka#/media/File:Distribution_of_Languages_and_Religious_groups_of_Sri_Lanka_1981.jpg there are significant Tamils in other regions.
