It is well documented that the Basque makila word comes from Latin bacillam (should we add an etymology note?), and the Basque colonizers didn't establish themselves in Brazil, so I don't think there can be any direct relation with Maculelê_(dance). --Xabier Armendaritz^(talk) 06:31, 15 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Spelling: makila / makhila[edit]

The form makila is far more used than makhila. Making a search in Google gives 157,000 results for Basque makila and 35,000 results for Basque makhila. I'm going to move the article. --Xabier Armendaritz^(talk) 20:34, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'd agree with that. My initial thought was it should be spell with the H due to makhila.com being a well-regarded place that makes them. However, I did note that the Euskara wikipedia version of this article does spell it without the H, as did a Basque person I spoke with by e-mail.Legitimus (talk) 21:11, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

In fact, makhila is a dialectal form traditionally used in the French Basque Country, but makila is nowadays the most widely used form even in the French Basque Country. The Hiztegi Batua (Basque normative dictionary) only shows the form makila (and not makhila). The Orotariko Euskal Hiztegia (General Basque Dictionary, a descriptive one) also shows makila as the main entry, and makhila is shown as a secondary form of the dialects of the French Basque Country. --Xabier Armendaritz^(talk) 21:37, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
