Daily Show[edit]

This town was featured in a segment on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart ("Downtown" -Aug. 9 2001-). Apparently it's a haven for strip clubs and prostitutes. -76.117.235.231 (talk) 02:17, 21 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Town history[edit]

As I understand it (from afar as a former West Virginian), the town's existence and history have been the source of some controversy. Maybe someone could write a bit about that? Malepheasant 09:03, 29 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Town of Jefferson, West Virginia[edit]

Jefferson was the youngest town in the state of West Virginia. It was founded by a group of business men to show with proper stewardship a town could function without a business and occupation tax (B&O tax) and to change the image of the area better known as the "Bad Lands". The county commission especially one commmissioner was totally against its forming. One commissioner went so far as to sign the paperwork in "red" stating he knows the town will be destine to fail. Naturally even through all the problems the town operated in the black until the the last administration who had sworn the see the town be desolved. Naturally the one county commissioner waited and even stated on the news but he could have assisted the town better in its formation and establishing of guideline. Yes, it was a bag of worms and few had the back ground to start a new town. Documents show it was the first town to incorporate in nearly 100 years. With that fact even the county commission had NO experience to assist. But the town would be a stumbling block for any effort to establish a much talked about "metro government" which would supposely cut operational cost by combining the different areas of administration and increase the population of Charleston. This would ensure the continuation of the flow of federals fund into Charleston but increase the power of one central region (county commission). —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 67.72.98.83 (talk) 17:46, 26 January 2007 (UTC).[reply]
