A fact from France Antarctique appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the Did you know column on 13 October 2004. The text of the entry was as follows:
Can anyone explain why this colony was known as "Antarctique" when clearly is has nothing to do with the antarctic? Bazonka (talk) 11:37, 28 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
"Antarctique" means "southern". Since Brazil is in the southern hemisphere, the French named the colony "Southern France", or "France Antarctique". Likewise, their later colony in Maranhão, close to to the Equator, was named France Équinoxiale.161.24.19.112 (talk) 12:36, 25 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
