Should Athlete redirect straight to Sportsperson?[edit]

Personally I think not, on the basis that an athlete often refers specifically to someone who participates in athletics (track and field) events, rather than sport in general.

The users Tevildo and Jcvamp also expressed a similar opinion here and here respectively.

However, when I changed the redirect my edit was reverted by Ewlyahoocom.

Merge proposal to Athletics[edit]

I'm opposed to the merger. Athletics and athletes are two distinct concepts, making them unlikely synonyms for search terms, and I don't see a need to add more clutter to Athletics. hateless 10:00, 25 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Propose redirecting to Sportsperson[edit]

This discussion did not produce much involvement before, but irrespective of whether "athlete" is usually thought of in relation to a specific sport, it is certainly thought of in relation to a Sportsperson before any of the other potential meanings included on this page. bd2412 T 17:23, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
