Third Winchester[edit]

Done. FYI, there were several instances of single page citations to the same source, one right after the other, that I consolidated. I will now be tweaking the page and forming {{sfnmp| }} consolidations where possible.Boo Boo (talk) 18:07, 8 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Would you mind giving this a read-through? I'm hoping to run it through FAC soon as several of the sources need to be back to the library by May 17. Hog Farm Talk 13:11, 22 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I’m vacationing in Europe right now. Be back in 2 weeks. From my phone, things look ok. I like having subheaders if there are more than two paras in a section. Like maps too. If still needed, I’ll look when I get back. TwoScars (talk) 17:06, 22 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
“ Some Confederates, including DeMorse, suggested that the brutality was a result of outrage at the looting down by the “ — “down” or “done” TwoScars (talk) 17:44, 22 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No worries - I've added a map and fixed the error above. I hope you enjoy your trip! Hog Farm Talk 01:12, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Hog Farm: I'm back. Anything I can do to help with Battle of Poison Spring? I looked for maps at LOC Civil War Maps, but did not find much. There is a hand-drawn map of Steele's route from a museum at Camden, but I doubt it can be used. I was hoping to find something that showed troop positions, but could not find anything. TwoScars (talk) 16:38, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I had no luck on maps, either. If you have the time, I'd appreciate it if you could give it a quick skim just to make sure the context is sufficient/everything seems OK. It's a bit of a trickier subject area than I usually deal with considering the related war crimes, so I want to make sure I get things right on it. Hog Farm Talk 17:23, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Hog Farm: A quick check using MS Word: In the Prelude section: "forgaing" is used twice instead of "foraging", and "totalled" is used instead of "totaled". Also, Union "soliders" is used instead of Union "soldiers". TwoScars (talk) 18:28, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
In the Battle section: "roadline" is used, but I think it should be "road line". In the Massacre section I would use " soldiers' " instead of " soldiers's ". In the Aftermath and preservation section it says "infantryment" instead of "infantrymen" or "infantry". TwoScars (talk) 18:38, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Reading the article: In the Background section: "By early 1864, it was unlikely that the Confederacy would win the American Civil War against the Union was slimming and the Confederate situation in Arkansas was particularly bad." Probably been changed multiple times. Maybe "By early 1864, the likelihood that the Confederacy would win the American Civil War was slimming, and the Confederate situation in Arkansas was particularly bad." TwoScars (talk) 18:56, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure if important: I did not know that the Arkansas River divides Arkansas in half—I looked it up. I wondered about how many men Steele had until I saw Footnote A and jumped down to the order of battle—three divisions? I have been told to not put three separate citations together, but to combine them instead. It looks like the most you have is two. TwoScars (talk) 19:24, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Under the Prelude section: "While Confederates soldiers searched" could be either "While Confederate soldiers searched" or "While the Confederates searched". TwoScars (talk) 19:30, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Under the Battle section: Maybe "roadline" could be replaced with "edge of the road". "road line" seems weird. TwoScars (talk) 19:43, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The Initial maneuvers subsection under the Battle section is where I wish there was a map that showed all the unit's positions—instead of the American Battlefield Protection Program map. It would help people who are not familiar with the USA and CSA leaders know who was on which side. TwoScars (talk) 19:48, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Under the Confederate attacks section: "While trying to reach the 18th Iowa to order the regiment to be reposition, Williams's horse" has one and a half issues. The Blue Book of Grammar and Punctuation says The Associated Press Stylebook recommends just an apostrophe: It's Tennessee Williams' best play. But most other authorities endorse Williams's. Williams's means “belonging to Williams.” It is not the plural form of Williams. People's names become plural the way most other words do. So "Williams's" is probably OK. The full issue is "reposition". Either "While trying to reach the 18th Iowa to order the regiment to be repositioned, Williams's horse" or "While trying to reach the 18th Iowa to order the repositioning of the regiment, Williams's horse".... TwoScars (talk) 20:01, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Under Confederate attacks: "terrain was reached that the guns could not be taken over and continued for Camden" is probably OK, but at first I thought the "taken over" part was about gaining control of the guns instead of being able to haul the guns over the terrain. TwoScars (talk) 20:06, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Probably not necessary, might be good for people not familiar with Kansas. Under the Massacre section: "history of hatred between Missourians and Kansans that dated back to Bleeding Kansas." Maybe "history of hatred between Missourians and Kansans that dated back a decade to a time called "Bleeding Kansas". " TwoScars (talk) 20:15, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Under Aftermath and preservation: "transferred three divisions on infantry from Louisiana to fight against Steele" - "of" instead of "on". TwoScars (talk) 20:18, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Also "with the Confederate infantryment" - "infantrymen" instead of "infantryment". TwoScars (talk) 20:19, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
"Steele's men reached Little Rock on May 3; DeBlack describes the Camden Expedition as the "greatest Federal military disaster of the Civil War in Arkansas". Might be OK, or could be two sentences. TwoScars (talk) 20:22, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Hog Farm: That is all I have. The Highlight Duplicate Links tool finds no duplicates. Recently I have been told that duplicate links are OK if they are in a different section, but I still like to have no duplicates. TwoScars (talk) 20:43, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! I am frequently embarassed by my poor spelling. Hog Farm Talk 01:18, 7 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
