Were the decapitated messengers just one Turk or several Frenchmen? The article lists both, but as if each is the sole incident.
The justification -- or lack of it -- for Bonaparte's execution of the Ottoman troops[edit]
Patrice Gueniffey's (volume 1 of 2) highly regarded Bonaparte biography, Bonaparte: 1767-1802 (U.S. edition 2015) goes into great detail on the massacre, citing contemporary sources. Since the entry is on the siege itself, the moral, ethical and legal questions of Napoleon's decision are of interest and relevant. I deleted one very good quote that had no reference and replaced it with the text from de Vattel which is very close to it. I'll be adding more to the entry in the coming days as appropriate.
