As far as I understand, the difference is that dressed herring is always a layer salad, while in the herring salad the components are just mixed. For a simple mixture of such components, the Russians have another salad, called Vinegret. --Off-shell (talk) 09:13, 31 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The reduction indicates that different types of pickled fish can be "dressed".
Occasionally, the salad is decorated with halves of hard-boiled quail eggs.
This is from my personal experience, hence putting it in "talk" rather than adding as an edit.
