Etymology[edit]

The word is most certaily not Turkic, but of Persian origin. It derives from Middle Persian hw’n /xwān/ and ist related to Avestan xᵛaini, both meaning "carpet, cloth" (see also Haft-Xwān-e Rostam, "seven feasts/camps of Rostam", where the word xwān has again the meaning of "camping", "picnic").
