Freddy in Korea[edit]

It's 1976. On my son's first birthday, I boarded a Tiger Airlines flight for Kunsan Air Base, ROK (Republic of Korea). After 24 hours, interminable stops, and who-knows how many dry box lunches, we landed at Kunsan Air Base, ROK, some 25 years after the Korean War--but you wouldn't know it. The ROKAF (Republic of Korea Air Force) remained on alert every day with live weapons, trained and ready to go back to war at a moments notice. In the Air Force, this was an "unaccompanied tour", meaning the Force wouldn't send your family with you, due to the living conditions and political tensions. The flying was great; but it got lonesome real fast. We got our solace every night in the Officers Club listening to Freddy Fender on the Juke Box singing "Before the Next Teardrop Falls" and "Wasted Days and Wasted Nights" that were right in tune with our lonesomeness!!! Thank you Freddy! 2603:8001:BE42:76F4:81F4:67BB:6EFC:8DAC (talk) 20:54, 25 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
