From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

COIT Cleaning and Restoration is a North American cleaning and restoration services company specializing in carpet, drapery, and upholstery cleaning for both residential and commercial customers. Founded in 1950 by Lou Kearn[1] near San Francisco’s iconic Coit Tower, COIT began with a patented drapery-cleaning process and has since expanded into a full-service cleaning company.

The company has over 50 corporate-owned and franchised locations in 25 states and five locations in Western Canada and in Thailand.

History[edit]

COIT was established in 1950 with the invention of a patented drapery-cleaning process by founder Lou Kearn. This process was notable for ensuring parallel pleats, even hems, and no shrinkage, setting a new standard in drapery care. By 1964, COIT expanded internationally, establishing the first of many franchises that would span generations.

The 1970s marked significant advancements for COIT, with the introduction of carpet and upholstery cleaning services in 1971 followed by the launch of innovative, truck-mounted cleaning equipment in 1975. This equipment improved cleaning effectiveness and drying times significantly. By 1980, COIT had expanded its national brand presence, including increased television advertising.

In 1990, COIT diversified its services further by launching restoration services for homes and businesses, helping to repair damage from smoke, mold, water, and natural disasters. Air duct cleaning was added in 1992, helping to improve indoor air quality for its customers.

The 2000s saw COIT expanding into tile and grout cleaning and by 2007, it began offering specialized services for natural stone cleaning, honing, and sealing. Recognizing the shift towards hardwood flooring, COIT introduced hardwood floor maintenance services in 2011.

By 2016, COIT had adapted to market trends once more by offering cleaning and sealing services for both indoor and outdoor concrete surfaces.

Innovations and Awards[edit]

Throughout its history, COIT has been at the forefront of innovation in the cleaning industry. The company’s early adoption of truck-mounted cleaning systems provided more effective and efficient cleaning solutions.

In 2021, COIT was recognized by the community in Omaha, Nebraska, winning the Reader's Choice Award for Best Carpet Cleaning[3] from The Reader.
